Nothing. But you're spending your time on 4chan. Why not every 10 minutes take a minute break to do a katakana or hiragana flashcard quiz? After slowly going at it over the last two months I've learned all the hiragana and stuff like little "ya" character after "sa" to make "sha" (obviously all of them, not just "sha"). Started on katakana now as a next step.

Just wondering what if anyone had resources/advice for reading hiragana? Basically how to turn the sounds/characters I've learned into an understanding of listening/reading japanese. Kind of at a loss on how to move forward in actually understanding things.

Not him, but learning Japanese is enjoyable for me, and it's one of the few things I can be motivated to try my best at. Even if it's for my hobbies, it's allowing me to enjoy more of what I like.
I think that's better than learning a skill or language I don't want to so I can get a job that I don't want and resenting it because I don't enjoy it.

>>12880188
not him, but go over all your kana again until you have no uncertainties left. Keep repeating until you're an expert, and even when you're learning grammar and other things, don't stop practicing your kana. It's really annoying when after a year you get stumped writing something because you forgot a kana for a few minutes.
As for advice on reading hiragana, I'd say try jumping into reading a simple manga with furigana. It won't make much sense at first, but you'll want to start reading something to put your knowledge of kana to some use. I'd also strongly recommend watching and listening to spoken Japanese, be it in music, anime/movies or whatever, so you'll experience how sentences are spoken and words are pronounced. Try to find a balance of learning new things and practicing things you learned, or you'll end up bored or overwhelmed. Mainly just jump into shit that you don't understand and keep at it until you start understanding stuff, and repeating that process over and over I guess

Honestly, it should only take you a couple of weeks at most to have a workable grasp of kana, so you're probably just not studying as hard as you think you are.
Just make sure you know your Japanese vowels, and then use flashcards or one of those kana drill websites. Say each kana aloud as you recognize it. Don't just quit after a single round through all the kana either. This is like memorizing your times tables as a kid, it's going to take a lot of reps before you can read kana confidently.
If drills are just too boring, you can try making flashcards with pictures of all the 2hus on one side and their names in kana on the other. Read the kana and then visualize the 2hu. Then flip to card to see if you were correct. This is less effective than just drilling the kana, but it might help you get started.

Most of the class time was spent speaking and listening with a lot of the kanji and vocabulary drill to be done on your own time. I think the main benefit of the class is having a hopefully native speaker who can answer your questions.

However, if you want to learn enough Japanese to read VNs, LNs, and so on you'll need to do a ton of self study eventually because no college curriculum is going to get you to even a middle school level.

Genki does teach like 2 pages of vocabulary every chapte, but that's probably not really enough though and you'd probably want something else alongside, but it will help a lot I'm sure, and would be good for reviewing things you already know.
If anyone else has some way of learning vocabulary, aside from things like Anki (I'm not good at spaced repetition at all) I'd like to know, since learning and remembering new vocabulary is my biggest problem right now

Also I'm not really having copious amounts of trouble with some of these VNs, but when they are describing the nationality and background of the french terrorists in Grisaia no Meikyuu it gets a little hard to follow. I'm so encouraged by the fact that half of you can't even read hiragana. I learned that in a few days.

You absolutely need that before starting kanji; once you get that down, learn kanji with furigana readings, and write down the words with romanji next to them if you need it. Eventually you'll start noticing things.

Try RtK but get a little discouraged at why you're told to know words like decameron or gall bladder. Then try some cell phone apps; JED and Obenkyo are great tools. Anki's nice with the right decks, once you have a decent foundation start reading Yotsuba and putting sentences into Anki. Read Imabi, Tae Kim and Reading Japanese the Manga Way just because you need that repetition. Eventually you'll have the kanji recognition to not stumble around as much and you'll pick up particles with time.

I took half a year of Japanese back in college, then a year of Swedish. The Japanese class was enormous, especially since I went to a university with lots of Chinese and Koreans. So we spent a lot of time in lecture, while my Swedish class was entirely in quiz sections.

The Japanese quiz sections were a lot less productive, since a lot of the foreign students couldn't speak English at an academic level (or maybe they could but they opted not to), so we weren't really able to have a lot of the in-depth discussions about the language that I felt made my Swedish class great. Also, my memory is a little hazy years later, but I remember doing a lot less conversation practice with partners in my Japanese quiz sections after the real basic "hello, my name is" stuff. Instead, the instructor would usually pick two people to have a dialogue based on whatever concepts we were learning at the time, which kind of put people on the spot. But that's more down to the instructor than anything. One last observation: depending on your university it is very possible that you will end up being the only white person in the room (once all the weebs who aren't serious drop), and that can absolutely have an effect on your performance if you aren't prepared for it.

If you must study Japanese, look for a small class size, preferably with people you can talk about grammar with. But I'd really recommend trying an easier language first (Swedish is great!). This will teach you how to approach a language class, and it will give you some much needed confidence when you later try to tackle a more difficult language.

>> No.12904513

>>12904399

I have the exact opposite problem, but maybe it's because I've been approaching it from a self-study approach rather than attending classes.

I've learned a decent amount of Japanese (N2 level) by reading VNs, looking up words, watching shows in Japanese, playing Japanese games, etc.

But recently I've been trying to learn Swedish because I have friends there and I visit the country every year. I find it much harder because I just can't find the kinds of resources that have been abundant for my Japanese studies. Swedish people all know English, so when they produce content, they usually make it in English so that it can be exposed to a wider audience. That, in turn, makes Swedish much harder for me to learn because there aren't billions of Swedish animus and mangos to learn from and keep me motivated. It's technically very, very easy compared to Japanese, but learning it in practice isn't as easy.

Starting my 3rd semester at a not very prestigious university now and it's been great. So far both of my professors have been college level Japanese teachers (which is probably unnecessary) and they've taught me a lot more than I'd have been able to learn in this time. Like many others have said, self-study is going to make the biggest difference at the end of the day, since it's still a structured course, but having someone you can email or visit during office hours with any questions makes it even more efficient.

You'll learn a lot of other things too that watching anime and inconsistent resources (such as some rando on here telling you "well when i was in japan...") aren't going to give you, like how to respond to certain questions straight from a native speakers mouth, and weird nuances that dictionaries may not necessarily account for. If you're already in school and debating doing it for obligatory credits or just for fun I'd say go for it if it's affordable. I started for both reasons and in 2 months I'll be able to declare it as a minor (lol) and still plan on continuing on afterwards.

I took one in college.

The course was painfully slow.

In two years, we covered very basic grammar, kana, and maybe 20 kanji. The most complex sentence we learnt to construct would be something like:

私は食べたいので、どんなパスタがありますか?

Plain form never mentioned, not even once. We learnt polite forms, then learnt a few conjugated forms separately, but not how to actually derive the conjugation, because we weren't allowed to know the plain form, in case we used it and offended someone.

The only thing it offered over self-study was the ability to have fake conversations that were pre-written with classmates, but that was just like reading a script and didn't require any thought, or listening skills.

We spent many hours on writing kana, which was arduous, as I'd been able to do it for years before.

The teacher was pretty bad, and never really explained why anything was wrong, or why it was the way it was, she just encouraged students to keep guessing the answer until they got it right, which didn't teach anything, and would mark things wrong if they were correct, but deemed "too advanced". She didn't review concepts consistently, so very little was retained by the class.

She let us watch Totoro once, though.

Also, the class started with ~50 people, but all but ~10 dropped out within weeks because they were weebs who didn't actually want to put in any effort.

I took Chinese and Japanese classes in University, and the Chinese classes were much more bearable and enjoyable.

In the Japanese classes you had three-quarters of the class wondering why you would use kana if you had romanji, or why you would kanji if you had kana. Most of them dropped out of the course when they realized that they would not be using romanji.

Everyone pronounced です as "day-soo," and most people could not tell the difference between the Japanese R sound and the English, so they would just use the English R.

I had always been somewhat jealous of Engineers before taking this class (at a primarily Engineering school), but after the 50th time that I heard "this isn't freaking Calculus or Linear Algebra, its just a language" I wanted to shoot myself in the head (though I guess they will make more money than I ever will, so whatever).

In the Chinese (Mandarin) class, most of the fellow students were Koreans or Indians who gave a damn, and mastering the tonal aspects of the language and the characters went at a more enjoyable (faster) pace, and the "lab" sections involved the teaching assistant actively conversing in Chinese, so the grammar sunk in faster, as did word association with the characters.

How can they function if they can't hear the difference between vowels and diphthongs?

Our teacher tried to teach the Japanese "R" as an "L" sound, because there's little hope in actually trying to get most anglophones to use an alveolar tap properly, let alone the full range of that consonant, and L is a closer approximation.

They can tell the difference between vowels and diphthongs, they just did not understand that there was a meaningful difference between "day-soo" and "day-s-"/"day-su-", and that the default reading of the kana, AKA the easiest way to pronounce it, was good enough.

People do not recognize the subtleties and inconsistencies of their own language until they learn another.

I just got one of these because I was interested in faceplates.

Do you guys know of any good games that are gramatically simple or ways I could use this to begin learning the language?

Good thinking. I already have the US version, but come to think of it Pokemon would have a shitload of vocab words with the attack names.

If you think で sounds the same as "day", you're not speaking correctly yourself, either.

>I have all the free time in the world. Have ADD though, so I have a hard time focusing. Help?

I also have ADD.

You will just do what everyone else does, except it will be harder for you to stay motivated and focused.

To help remain focused, get a Github account and go to http://www.tomato.es/..

This site helps you partition work in 25-minute sessions, with a rest period in-between. Since you have ADD, following the 5-minute break regimen might not appeal to you, but shoot for at least 4 or more "tomatoes" a day (roughly 2 hours). Within these time partitions, only work on Anki, Tae Kim, etc. I would also recommend enabling the ticking sound, so that you will always be aware that you are within a tomato session and not accidentally start something else.

Therapeutic doses of Adderall can improve memory retention and recollection, even when you are not under its effects. However, it is not necessary at all to learn Japanese, since the nature of Anki and other resources accommodates to the speed at which you can use them. Also, Adderall has more than a few negative effects for long use, so do not take it if you can.

I know, but I am not sure how to better write it the sound in the English alphabet. Hepburn Romanization does not carry my meaning well enough.

How should I do it?

You can change the language to Japanese in the US version, you would just have to start over.

the closest thing would be 'deh', but everyone here in this thread should understand the proper pronunciation of で already anyways

Yeah, that is a better way of describing the sound.
Thanks.

I've got 650 cards to do in anki because i missed a few days and I cannot find the motivation to clear them even though it will only take a few hours at worst
please help me before I "blog" more

Long shot replying to a 12 day old post but, I'm just starting to learn kanji, and this program seems to be a pretty good alternative to having actual physical flash cards. But is there anyway to change it so that it accepts either reading of the same kanji? I'm sitting here memorizing the first 10~15 most common kanji, and when 中 comes up for instance, sometimes it wants なか and other times it wants うち so I get it wrong if I guess what it wants incorrectly even though I know both readings...

Just lower the amount of cards loaded daily for fuck sakes.

Also, I just realized it takes me a few hours to do 30 cards.

At least I have all the time in the world.

Why are you spending 5 minutes per card?

Oh, I thought you meant 650 new cards.

No, it takes me a few hours to memorize 30 new cards and successful review the rest.

Anyone else get frustrated when you see the "taught in grade X" thing when looking up a character? "This kanji was taught in fourth grade! You're literally dumber than a fourth grader!" is all I can hear.

It makes me feel like I should actually sit down sometime and grind out all the jouyou kanji (or at least the kyouiku) but I fuckin hate flash cards.

>> No.12920720

>>12920681
Not really. They start studying kanji early just like English speakers start studying how to spell words early. ... There's 2000~3000 kanji to learn, just like you end up studing thousands of spellings of words in elementary school, albeit the kanji is a bit harder because although some of the symbols are re-used in more complex kanji it isn't like the roman alphabet where you memorize 26 letters and then everything is a combination of exactly those 26. You did study spelling while in elementary school, right anon? If not in that case go ahead and feel retarded.

I got into Japanese at a really young age but I plan on having a job related to the fashion industry where french and Italian are preferred. I also read stuff about Asian languages but the weren't specific.Probably Chinese is best that's were alot of clothes are manufactured but if I want to get into the high-end fashion brands a lot wont even work with you unless you speak french. I searched up H&M , Uniqlo ,etc and they all want bilingual people.
What do anons?
I've already started french in high school and Japanese in middle school but I'm very poor in both since I never actually spoke with it. Is it possible to learn 2 at the same time?

I want to start learning.

technically
is it smart?
if you wanna take forever to learn half of each

youre better off focusing on mastering one language at a time than dividing your attention and making slow gains in both languages.
Obvi, start with french

You don't need to master it, but you need to have one language significantly more advanced to not get confused.

i don't know just how in-depth the language requirement is, but i'd err on the side of caution

I can just barely follow a conversation when the talkers are slow.

I have remembered less than 10 kanji.

I can only read things that have been spelled out phonetically with kana, very slowly.

I know many, many words and definitions, but have very little grasp on grammar and syntax.

If I suddenly got dropped into japan right now, I'd probably only barely manage to convey my meanings to the locals.

In all, my grasp on the language is almost 100% auditory. I have extremely poor comprehension when it comes to reading and writing.

The realistic vagina, from the moment of insertion gives you an uncomparable sense of satisfaction. It is because of 4 elements: the pleasure of the mouth, throat, vagina and anus
