It didn't do anything. Kokoro no Placard did not sell as much as Koi Suru Fortune Cookie and was nowhere near as big of a cultural phenomenon in Japan.

AKB isn't irrelevant by any means, not by a long shot. But the general consensus is they're on the way out. Heck, most of my 7th grade students don't even know who Mayuyu is. The 9th graders know her, but it's pretty clear as you go down the grade levels that AKB becomes more irrelevant and disliked the younger you go.

AKB has some popularity among the 9th graders and some 8th graders, but as said, decreases the younger you go to the point that 7th graders seem completely clueless about AKB members and most of them complain when AKB songs are requested during lunch hour song time. 9th graders don't complain at all and 8th graders are a mix.

Momoiro Clover seems to be a case where no one seems to say they like them, but their songs get played on rare occasion during lunch request hour sometimes, so clearly some fans HAVE to be at this school.

Morning Musume is completely irrelevant to them.

Nogizaka46 and NMB48 both have some popularity (Osaka is a few hours away, the closest theater to here). SKE fandom is largely non-existent here though Jurina seems semi-famous, and HKT is a group many seem to be surprised even exists. Sashihara seems to be grouped with AKB and not HKT.

In case you're curious, popular non-female idol music at my school seems to be: EXILE, Arashi, Kis-My-Ft2, E-Girls, Sandaime J Soul Brothers, Nishino Kana, Sekai no Owari, and so on. Kyarypamyupamyu was popular, but I haven't heard anyone mention her in a long time actually. From what I understand, groups like Sexy Zone and Kis-My-Ft2 lose a lot of their popularity by the time students graduate from high school. I know a lot of college students too and none of them seem to like any Johnny's group aside from Arashi.
