How the fanbase and games themselves allow for some many interpretations for the characters. The series is a little different for everyone. 'Fanon is Canon' and stuff like that. The characterization that exists is just enough to give a framework, but not so much that it removes mystery or interpretation.

One of the best examples is how many different depictions there exist of Alice; and some of her deep character traits. I'll give an example:

Why does she aim to make an independent doll? Because that is effectively creating life; especially how it is in some religions; gods making people out of clay or the earth. Alice's mother is Shinki; a God who claims to have created everything within Makai. Including Alice.

Alice has either a God Complex or a Mother Complex; or both, to the degree she is obsessive over her creations and heavily anti-social. She is ultimately attempting to do what Shinki does.

Also a lot of stuff is based on cool mythology and mythology is awesome and adds a lot to characters; even those who did not have much to start with.
