IIDX Kaiden player trying out games in Japan for the first time here. Posting for that one guy that was interested in how well IIDX skill transfers to Pop'n.

I only played a couple more credits today, was busy with Comiket. Right now, I'm just sightreading everything in the Lapistoria folder, never playing something more than once. Playing low 40s for the first two songs, mid 40s for the final stage, I passed my first 46. Things really ramp up in this range, it seems. I don't know if I'll be passing any 47s before leaving next week.

I bought a cheap dance mat and started using it with Stepmania even though you guys told me that's for scrubs.

I don't care how scrub it makes me, it's fucking fun. I don't even know how to describe it, it's like my whole body has suddenly learned to enjoy existing for the first time. Just easy songs make me run out of breath and sweat like a pig, I can't even imagine how it will be when I can do songs on expert.

if you osu dickheads are gonna talk in here then can you answer a question for me

i haven't actively played it since 09 but the last time i launched it the difficulty rating system changed and it confuses me.
on one hand now there's granularity instead of "everything is a 5 star", the harder stuff i used to play seem to be 4.something while the easier stuff are less than a full 4, which is cool.
but then it goes all the way to 10? and the "garbage fuck off hard" stuff i'd downloaded are like 6s? do 8s 9s and 10s exist? do people play them? why?

>> No.12376852

>>12376815
A lot of stuff changed like now pp is gained by skill and what you are ranked on a map doesn't matter.
Star system changed because the old one was just wrong and no one cared about it anyways, now stars can actually give you an idea about how hard a map is.

https://osu.ppy.sh/s/150945 for example this impossible to play just for looks map is 45.69 stars, the highest ranked maps are 10-11 which are tag4 maps.

>> No.12376862

>>12376815
The rating system has improved a lot from what it used to be, but it's still not perfect. Someone might find a 6 star map a lot harder than a 7 star map for instance, but that mostly has to do with the mapping technique used. Anyway, to summarize:
1 easy
2 easy/normal
3 normal
4 hard
5 insane
6 insane+
7 insane++
and so on

7-8 stars and up are mostly for players with a good amount of skill and years of experience. Tournament maps tend to be around 8-9 stars, and there are plenty of people who can pass those.

New organization?
The way you describe it is how it's always been and still is.
There are a couple of tabs in the top right corner, try setting the rightmost one to "no grouping" and the one above that to "title" or "artist" or whatever you want.

just having "top of the line specs" isn't how you get bemani games to run on your hardware.

This stuff doesn't require "top of the line" hardware to run. Most of the bemani machines run on hardware that is so specific (and old, lol) that when you run it on anything newer, it actually degrades performance.

currrent iterations of pop'n and DDR run on dell optiplex's with a $10 videocard, essentially. Throw in a top of the line video card and they don't display arrows correctly, or wont go into HD mode without lag.

>> No.12386974

>>12386863
I think they are right handed, but that doesn't matter.

Your scratch hand should cover 3 keys and the turntable, while your other hand should always be able to cover for 4-5 keys. The hand that is covering for 4-5 keys is mostly static and only the thumb shifts around.

(assuming you are right-handed) Scratching is one of the hardest mechanics of the game and having your dominant hand on the turntable can really give you an advantage. However, you lose the advantage of your dominant hand covering for 4-5 keys. But since this hand is mostly static... I think muscle memory should overcome this disadvantage.

This has been argued since the beginning but it's probably all preference in the end. I'm 1P because it felt the most natural to me when I was starting out. Most top ranking Japanese players are 2P side if that means anything.

you could probably use like a cthulhu pcb or something from any old fighting game parts shop http://www.focusattack.com/toodles-cthulhu-multi-console-pcb/
as for the buttons, i think the proper sanwas are quite expensive/not easy to get?, there are other more accessible and cheap buttons of the same diameter, but they won't be built for hella popn/have optimal microswitches etc
if you have access to woodworking tools and stuff you could probably make yourself a non-ideal but competent controller for pretty cheap. but i'm not really sure how much you'd end up saving vs a dao if you don't have any tools and want realdeal proper buttons

Arcade timing is based on frames. You're allowed to combo easier on LR2 and the clear gauge/timing is based on the tags on the bms file.

if you're comparing the arcade to HDD rips, the timing windows are the same.

The turntable is different for every machine and keys if you are using a different key set up on your controller. Also monitor height and being able to adjust to standing while playing.

The ideal is honestly just building one yourself. Chinks make buttons for about 25 bucks for a set that work decent enough, an arduino is 10 bucks, and a rotary encoder is 15. The only hassle is building a box for it all, and getting better springs and switches because the Chinks ship them with retarded 100g switches and 200g springs. Removing the springs and just using the switches is alright on a budget.

I don't own a USKOC, but I've got a JP one and I hate it. It doesn't matter if I spend hours fiddling around with tiny pieces of cardboard and plastic, I can't get the buttons in a half-decent state. So I just recently started iidx and I've got some ps2 released (empress, troopers, etc.)

What's my best course of action to not pick up too many bad habits? I've just been watching Darqs videos up til now for hand techniques, and I've just been trying to complete every song on a difficulty number, then moving up (complete all 4s, then all 5s, etc.) Is that a good enough way to improve?

>> No.12442620

>>12442592
That's the best way to improve and enjoy the game.

Pick an optimal technique and play every song you haven't played yet.

I wouldn't say it's best to wait until you finish clearing the song folder before moving on to the next level. If you're trying to improve fast, play songs where you fail often to work on reading/technique.It's also a good idea to also play easier songs to work on timing.

i can offer a few pieces of potential advice
1: if you're that guy from earlier playing with a fight stick's buttons i'd say that's potentially extremely detrimental to getting used to mentally mapping the columns to the buttons
2: are you using hi-speed? throw it at like, 2.5 or something. that should be totally manageable for anything that isn't in the 200+bpm range (and if it isn't, get used to it) (before long you'll want to adjust it a bit for higher and lower bpm songs and eventually learn about green number but that can wait)
3: try some easier 6s, you might find some that are challenging in the same ways as the 5s that you're good at are, with some practice getting some down will boost confidence, give you more experience, make you want to try more stuff and grind them out (maybe blue rain? maybe deep striker? idk)
