Right now they're only discussing Atelier Shallie (recently released) and Ar Nosurge/Ciel Nosurge, but you can just ask there - they helped me with a recommendation on what Atelier game to play after Totori too.

I've only played Totori (and a bit of Annie), so I can't say much out of personal experience, but from what I heard Atelier Iris (the one recommended by >>12324827) and Mana Khemia are more like traditional JRPGs; the Arland sub-series (Rorona, Totori and Meruru) went back to Atelier's roots and again is a rather open item-crafting game that also happens to have JRPG combat. The Dusk sub-series (Ayesha, Escha & Logy, Shally) seems more serious and story-focused.

Totori seems like a popular entry point for the series, and it did indeed get me addicted (>70 hours of playtime in two weeks, played start to finish twice, ordered Meruru). Apparently Rorona is a bad place to start due to a lot of minor issues making the game frustrating unless you play the recently released remake (Atelier Rorona Plus).

Totori Plus is a good point to start because it's got the best introduction of the Arland games and does a good job of reintroducing characters from Rorona. I say go from that to Meruru and then Rorona Plus because R+ added Totori and Meruru into it via time travel shenanigans, and you're also going by improved mechanics that way.

I prefer Meruru's personality, but I like Totori's too. I want to be her apprentice and call her Totori sensei.
