Sanae is either the 81st, 99th, or 108th generation decendant of Suwako down her maternal line.
Also, Suwako, while a parent of Sanae's ancestor, was not the mother, but the father. She can change her gender at will.
It seems that the Japanese were aware of some species of amphibian changing gender in a same sex environment at least 1500 years before that trivia appeared in Jurassic Park.

The number of men who are magicly gifted are few and generally what they do know is not suited for combat or projecting power.

The magically gifted women of Gensokyo generally look down on the men there and are not really interested in romancing them. In some cases they know they have to marry one of them in order to produce a child to carry on the their line, but they are not happy about it.

Men in Gensokyo are good for working the fields and fathering kids and not much else.

There is nothing that says that male youkai don't exist. My guess is that male youkai settle their arguments by smashing faces, rather than having a magical mock battle that at most tears a little bit of clothing. HULK SMASH simply doesn't lend itself that well to shooters.
