You're not missing anything. That serie is awful : it starts with violence without any good reason, and tries to justify it later by pretending it was Reisen's doings.
It's the embodiment of the "I totally improvise as I'm moving along" approach to a story. In some case, it may work, but in most cases, it's incredibly obvious.

Not to mention the huge amount of gorn and Sanae's backstory who seems to be a weak copypasta of Ange's sob story. As if the "I've been bullying in school so I'm crrrrrrrazy" wasn't already overused, of course.

Without complaining about the porn, there are some H-doujinshi that are pretty good even if you take the porn out.
For example, the one with Yamame, that CGRascal butchered. If you remove all the porn parts, you still have a pretty solid story. Lower than your average romance story, but better than the "touhou want to suck some dicks, sex ensuits".
Another example is the one with the three Hieda girls. Most of the doujinshi is about the guy's relation to the Hieda, and only a small has him finally getting the girl.

My point is that it can be the focus of the story, but if there's nothing to back it up, you can just take a few pictures from rotten.org, photoshop them to add ribbons, and claim you made a touhou fanvideo.
And if you take the story, and remove all the gorn, it's still pretty poor.

Addendum : the "Hieda story" is called Bamboo Flowers, by the group Gyokotsu Kouzou. It got translated, and it's pretty awesome.
The Yamame story is called A Disease Woman's Story, by the group Rapid Rabbit, and was apparently retranslated.

Story was never the main point of KKHTA. And besides gore (and shock factor) there are lots of other things to enjoy in it.
Characterisation. Best Koishi I've ever seen. Craziness alone was already quite original back then. But she is not just simply insane as it may look after the first 3 episodes. Her character is actually much deeper. Also I really enjoyed Satori, Flan and Remi, as well as comparison of relation in Komeiji and Scarlet families. And Yukari was ultra cool too.
Ideas. Yukari x Koishi fusion? 100% awesome. Koishi using her eye tentacles for fighting? Fuck yeah!
Art direction. Best direction in any touhou fan video I've ever seen (actually 80% of all touhou videos has none). Those scenes, those music choices.
And actually art itself. Despite poor art KKHTA's author is better at depicting emotions than some of the best doujinshi artists.

Guess I haven't watched it long enough. Last episode I watched before giving up out of boredom has Reimu fighting Koakuma while Reisen was fighting Reisen.

However, you definitely should not speculate on the reasons I dislike that show, neither you should try to write your opinion as facts.
KKHTA is not good, and while Koishi is different from usual, this is hardly the "best Koishi" I saw. The Koishi Gourmet serie is better, and doesn't try to cater for maximum grimderpness.
I guess that for someone who doesn't care at all about canon, it may be a good show, if you manage to forget the obvious that the author is making the story as it's progressing, but it has the annoying effect of attracting attention on Koishi.

I don't mind that much just because I give any story a few freebies if it's for the sake of getting the story rolling. What I hated is how the story became masturbatory really quickly. It's hard to point out specific things because I haven't read it in so long, but I remember one of the things I specifically hated being how Utsuho became some kind of fawning best friend within like ten updates, and the story as a whole made that transition to the usual "waifu" style of quest thread where the choices only serve to deepen a relationship with one of the female characters and result in sexings. I find that style of story very distasteful

I think the only touhou themed quest thread I ever actually enjoyed was A Wizard Is You. It was really fun to read because the protagonist was a Somebody, not just a nameless self insert. He was a high level Wizard from a d&d campaign. Some of my favorite chapters were where he'd remember some of his old adventuring buddies, one of which was killed in front of him by a mindflayer. In other words, he had a history (even if it was something that developed in play), a personality (influenced by voters, but ultimately a jackass yet genius wizard), and a goal (GET HOME!). He didn't just serve as a gateway between the reader and his waifus

People are always complaining about nameless self inserts, but the protagonists often do have a personality. Atleast the ones from stories that don't get almost immediedly dropped by the authors.

The problem is that most stories are either :
-started with a gimmick, and by that, I mean that instead of having a plot, it relies on taking a character, original or not, and putting it into Gensokyo while hoping Anonymous will make it interesting, or that inspiration will come later. That's what the wizard story and the Bastion stories were, just Anon "throwing shit and seeing what sticks" in order to make a full story out of this. Sometimes it works, but often the writer ends up giving up, since the adrenalin rush of starting a new story disappeared and the writer finds himself having to keep writing a story, while being unable to decide what to do with it.
-built on the harem system, where Anonymous us supposed to choose a girl and stick with her. I don't really need to comment that, and it's not really my fancy.

Now, I don't say these are bad things (it would be a hypocrisy, since I used the same tropes when I wrote -not that my stories were great), but the problem is that it's an overused trend. It probably worked with Batman and the wizard, because they have a personality, they're powerful enough to avoid getting killed by ferals youkais, but the bastion story has a boring character, a weird narration, and the average joe story was... err... I think it's one of the first story where I genuinely thought something was wrong. Should I go further?

I remember when I was following a story and during one of votings with open proposition of action I tried to force an interesting choice. Forced, since it's like 3 and a half anonymous voting and they went for boring. Got me banned. I lost interest through this ban, got caught up in different things, stories not updating and overall boredom of that place made me put visiting on hold. Didn't get back there since then. The obnoxious community for the most part is poisoning to a visitor, too much special club feeling and unspoken tight collar rules for a site for stories on the go. Feels like a karma-fapping login site, not anonymous story telling spot.

I remember there was a story, I think on 'underground' section of the site, about a guy awakening in the moment when Koishi is dragging him into Palace over the rocks. It follows an amusing random actions style, but without memes. Later on it reveals a bit of backstory, and the fact that it's set in, like, a hundred of years forward. Gensokyo is empty and in ruins for the most part. And it changes tone gradually into a more of a "sad, lost in a forsaken town" from a "I'm high on cocaine". A funny story actually. Kind of a fallout 3 feeling the one you get near canyon on north-west when you see ruined highway from the side of a cliff. Must be because I was playing there when I met the story.

I advice everyone to read at least first several updates. At least for a completely different read compared to all else.

That's what I say, but I'm pretty sure there is at least one Fallout x Touhou crossover story. Probably not on THP, since all stories on THP are dropped before being finished.

It's not fallout crossover. It's just that it felt like it. The gensokyo being wasteland, abandoned ruins of what it was, with inhabitants just hanging around, and for a change, outside being just like that. AND I played fallout at that moment and was in the described place in game.

it doesn't start like post-apocalyptica until some time. It starts like lolsorandom, but actually funny, like daydream story. Later it changes the tone a bit. One of the best stories on site in my opinion.

I dunno, it's pretty obvious that, as for KKHTA, the writefag here started without having any idea what to do. There are many parts that are useless, and by that, I mean that you could remove them from the story, that would change anything. They have no impact. And the writefag obviously doesn't speak English.
Too bad, if it was written in his native language, it would probably be a bit better. That wouldn't fix the erratic story, but it would feel less painful to read.
