well I like SSiB and novel.
I think what ZUN wanted to is denying casual's famfic. Few years ago(before 2010),most of touhou fans got wrong idea about gensokyo seriously.
In their touhou ,characters and danmaku battles are always be treated pompously like "yukari too stornk" "muh master spark""gensokyo rocks" "yuuka sadistic monster" .
And ZUN stated that they are not so cool and gensokyo is just a rural district. MCs went to moon and offered Yorihime a danmaku battle.
Marisa explained rules to Yorihime (beauty is important) . Marisa said in her book,"If one were free, they need to pursue only "the most efficient, the most effective.Therefore, in a world without rules, danmaku is nonsense."
And Yorihime bodied them completely. Why? Because Yorihime didn't need to follow their local rules nor have fun.She just removed invaders with the most effective attacks.
After all, gensokyo is a small rural district and danmaku battle is silly girls game for outsider,.
Yukari can't beat lunarians and she even knelt on the ground.there was no epic fight that casuals love.
The whole plot is yukari trying to obtain something form strong lunarians by a trick. Its very small as gensokyo itself.
As a result, casual fans went mad and disliked bougetsusho. I don't think Aki eda did good job but that's not the issue.
Other official manga are almost SoL. no epic spell card. no edgy youkai duel.
ZUN is saying gensokyo is not land of danmaku battle and danmaku battle is no longer in circulation in another place.
If you read his works,you can understand what I'm saying.

The "casual" fans' visions are far better. In pretty much all of the games the Touhou girls (with numerous super powers) have done nothing but beaten each other up, be it through danmaku or actual fighting. Therefore the fans have been pretty accurate in that sense.

ZUN is shitting on a large (and also in my opinion valuable) portion of his own fanbase if he tries to enforce "Lol, let's have nothing but boredom, little pranks and teaparties!" How fucking interesting.

There are several kind of fans. From the one who only plays the shmup games, to the one who never touched them.

For example, when a new manga is released, it influences directly the reading fans, and influences indirectly the fans that only play the game (because hearsay and such).
Which means that even if they don't care about the books, they are aware of it.

Now, let's say there is a new epik funny meme XDDD made by some moron like KimikoMuffin.
Let's pretend it's called "Kyouko's theme goes with anything", and represents Myouren dancing while Kyouko's theme is playing.
Somehow, it get popular, and it's of course spammed and reposted everywhere.
Even if you don't care, you end up learning about it, and you end up being influenced by it.
In that way, it was relevant, since it can be recognized by all fans.

So even if you don't like it or don't care about it, you ended up learning about it. So it ends up being relevant, since it touched the majority of the fanbase.

SSiB is probably the only official Touhou manga where something actually happens, so if you're looking for something more eventful, you've already read it. Everything else is just take it easy and try not to fall asleep while reading if you were looking for exciting stuff. The fairy manga and WaHH are pretty cute though. Look into some doujinshi, they cover a much broader range of genres. You're definitely more likely to find something more fun to read there.

Why is it that all the Touhou manga are like this?

I mean yeah, SSiB was godawful, but at least it focused on the stuff that mattered.

Every fucking other manga focused on slice of life stuff, which I highly doubt anyone is interested in reading all that much.

What would you like to see: Marisa Master Sparking some horrible youkai into oblivion, or Sukuna pranking Reimu?
