My first exposure to it was (admittedly) through running across a role playing group about something of roughly a decade ago, where their "handlers" were acting like retarded lesbians. You know, kind of like the overabundance of the fanart gives the impression of that being normal. This of course, also gives off the initial impression of it being retarded and was successful in warding me off from some time.

A few years later I wound up looking into it again, and realizing that it was just the fanbase that was being a cancerous shit stain that was giving everyone false and/or negative impressions of the series, and that outside of appearance, nothing those faggots did had any real correlation with Touhou in actuality whatsoever.

Thankfully many of those cancerous faggots have since moved onto the latest fad in the form of MLP like the hipster fucks they are, so if there's just one thing I'm grateful to for the existence of that shit, it's that.

Actually there was Sengoku Gensokyo, which is a Touhou doujin game based on Sengoku Rance minus the rape (sadly), which was also translated pretty early.

One of my friends on a now-dead Boktai forum I used to frequent would constantly post about Touhou, which I thought looked stupid at first, but then I actually got around to playing EoSD and thought it was pretty fun. The first fan video I was exposed to was surprisingly not "McRoll", but rather "Sound test in Touhou". I wanted to know more about the characters I saw, so I did some research and things just snowballed from there.
TLDR; Friend infected me with the Touhou, and then it was the music and the lore of the world that got me hooked.

I had heard about Touhou in the context of them being really hard games, but hadn't paid them much attention until one time when I went to a con and they had a whole setup with every Windows Touhou game at that time. I hung out with a group of hardcore fans for most of that day, cheering on their successes and laughing at my own failures. I lost track of that particular group of people, but I decided to look more into Touhou, and now here I am.

Found the character page on the wiki, thought it was a private wiki for some sort of silly forum roleplay game because the art was, well, ZUN quality. But I was impressed since the character backgrounds were pretty solid and it didn't read like the ego trip of a teenage furry.

Then I actually read the front page and learned that it was a game, gave it a spin, and here I am now.

What can I say? I'm just a sucker for that kind of stuff, and there's no shortage of it for Touhou.

I was watching youtube LPs of Kaizo Mario and saw an Automatic Mario remix of one of the NND medleys.
I recognized some of the anime stuff but I wanted to understand more of the references so I checked out some IOSYS 2hu theme mixes.

Ironically I didn't play the shmups until discovering /jp/, so it somehow made me go from secondary to primary
