When I first got into ASMR like 3 years ago I thought Japanese people would be really good at it for a variety of reasons. I've been disappointed though. Only recently has it begun to catch on and it's pretty far behind in terms of development. In fact, some of the decent stuff on NND a year or so ago was removed due to unpopularity/bullying.

Sachi_asmr is alright though, but as I said, she's a recent development. Anitei on nicodou is good as well (username あにてぃ. She sounds uncannily similar to Sachi so I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same person). Yulia is alright as well but I think her stuff is all on youtube these days. I wouldn't bother scrounging around Japanese sites for ASMR unless you're curious. All of the good stuff is on youtube, usually in English.

And then there's that little sister whispering into your ear shit, which is all LECHEROUS GARBAGE. A true ASMR otaku would disregard any such videos.

People who find these noises irritating interpret them as an intrusion of their personal space. Typical ASMR sounds (the sound breathing, chewing, lips smacking, tapping) all convey extreme closeness to the listener. To people who didn't sign up for this, listening to a podcast or watching a Let's Play video for instance, these sounds are very unpleasant because they weren't prepared to feel close to somebody. Violating personal space is also seen as taboo in some first world cultures, so they may even feel deeply offended.

ASMR fans, on the other hand, enjoy these sounds for the same reason most other people hate them. Often, but not necessarily, it's quiet, intimate sounds that "trigger" a certain part of the brain in a way that feels very pleasant. ASMR fans go into these videos anticipating a feeling of closeness, so they don't find it aggravating.

Some trivia: ASMR stands for "Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response," but that's really just a bullshit name probably coined by someone on Reddit to make the phenomenon sound more credible than it actually is. I remember going into the Piano room in my University and I was practicing my basic chords. As my hand touched the keys, I felt the very same tingle one feels when they listen to ASMR videos. Hell, I even had an "orgasm" although it's not sexual pleasure, it's something else entirely.

For those who don't understand what experiencing ASMR is like, I'll give a simple explanation.

Imagine instantly becoming very relaxed and comfortable. And there is nothing but the present, all your worries, stress, anger, frustration, anything like that is just GONE. There's just you, and that weird guy with a stick tapping a piece of wood.

But, what really stands out, is the high sensory awareness you get at the same time.

Ever heard a sudden noise outside your field of vision that made you jump? You turn around and it's almost as if time has slowed to a crawl. You suddenly hear the tiniest of sounds and pay perfect attention to the smallest of movements in your field of vision. Trying to make sense of the noise you heard, to find the source.

It's that kind of deal. And it stays as long as you're in this relaxed state.

And because you're so absorbed in the present, it gets ridiculously easy to, for example, spend hours just watching someone stack and play around with coins. Time passing just isn't a concern. At all.

And it's not boring, it's not something you regret in hindsight either like "Shit, why did I waste my time like that!". Rather it's a very fulfilling experience when you successfully trigger it in full force.

That's why people bother watching these videos of people making noise with plastic bags for 20 to 40 minutes. It's fucking amazing.

My uneducated guess would be that the pleasure centers of the brain that fire when you play the piano in a certain environment are similar to those that are typically triggered when experiencing ASMR. Everyone's experiences it different, obviously, since not all our brains are wired the same. It's difficult to provide a general explanation to psychological phenomena; since the nature of the brain is so erratic that there are lots of outliers.
Also, keep in mind that I'm just an Anonymous making speculation on an imageboard for weeaboos. For all you know, I could just be pretending that I know more than I actually do. For the record, I don't know any more about psychology than what I learned in an introductory course in college.

Can't say. I've experienced it all my life, even as a tiny little thing, and the only mind altering substances I've let into my system is caffeine, and as an adult, alcohol.

Point is, it's being almost overwhelmed by a certain experience, everything else just goes away because your whole focus becomes centred on one thing.

I've no doubt you could invoke it with hard drugs if they enhance the impact of sensory input. Most who experience ASMR often, at least those I've talked to and myself, are pretty sensitive to fine sounds and touch to begin with.

Sometimes so much it's easy to get so overwhelmed you just shut down and can't deal with the situation. If you're in a conversation you just stop making any sense of what is being said.

It's a bit tricky this subject, since it varies in intensity from person to person, and from each experience itself. And not everyone gets it either to begin with. Not to mention it could last for less than a second, in which case it's hard to analyze, or a long while. Which is why the recordings are so great because if you find one that tickles your fancy, you get the chance to continuously expose yourself to the trigger. Real life is rarely so convenient.

I made that post, and yes that's exactly right, I get the tingling sensation as well, forgot to mention that, my bad, which is sad because that's the key identifier of ASMR when people usually explain it.

Always at the back of the head/top of the neck, I've heard some mention parts of the spine too though. Don't think that has happened to myself however.

One description I've heard for the "tingles", and it kind of fits, is "scalp massage for the brain".

Definitely agree. It's something I've considered quite extensively and I've come to the conclusion that there is definitely something intimate about it. Perhaps sexual perhaps not, but definitely intimate. I can never experience ASMR from people I don't like or if I'm not feeling a particular way. I also notice that the vast majority of my ASMR go-to's are female. I'm not sure if girls are just better at it or if I prefer them because I'm male. Pretty much all evidence points towards intimacy and sexuality in some way. Jokes aside, I won't deny that ASMR can be non-sexual more often than not. I think the sensation has more to do with grooming and hushed tones than sex. These are things that seem to usually only be done in the company of close family (in other mammals, at least). I think the way it hits many of the same brain cells that sex does (speculation, no research has been done on this, to my knowledge) probably parallels the proximity of family units to sexual activity.
