Please discuss the Touhou games and STGs at large here.

Thread challenge:
NMNB Stage 3 of whatever game you are currently working on.
Any difficulty is allowed, but remember that challenging yourself is probably better for your personal development than mindless victories.

I feel that the long key travel distance my keyboard has is frequently messing up my (near)death bombing. I figured that using flat buttons with a short travel distance would help and I seem to have achieved slightly better results by using a cheap Logitech controller for bombing, shooting and focusing and the keyboard for movement. Ordered a flat gamepad with very short-travel buttons from PlayAsia, hopefully it would improve my results even further by having even shorter key travel distance and not being a giant bulky piece of plastic that Logitech is.

Anyone else want to blame key travel distance for failing with death bombing? Any consensus on using flat keyboards among STG players?

Not very content with how I handle the second Alice spell, and the second midboss spell. Got lucky with the midboss spellcard and managed to beat st's performance with a few thousand cherryMAX this time. Didn't do the neat graze on the nonspell before it, though.

Death and two bombs on the final nonspell, so the run doesn't meet the conditions for the OP. I'll return to it, but probably on the higher difficulty mode, as it's the one I'm more familiar with (and working on, anyway).

>>11772126
I have a challenge for you, anon. (optional, of course)

Beat this Hard mode score with either the Lunatic or Hard difficulty. Obviously, you don't have to do it, but seeing how close the ending results are to each other, I don't think you'd have to spend several hours in order to reach an acceptable result.

Looking forward to see more people grab onto the challenge on the OP, it's actually rather nice.

Sorry for the late response. I'm watching the SnW anniversary stream while playing, and paying more focus to the former, so the gameplay suffers.

Yeah, in any case, most of the "accidental" suicides and stuff were actually useful. I moved a couple around, but they mostly remained at the same places. Failed a bunch of stuff and used a couple of external bombs, but SakuyaB is rather lenient with bombs, so it wasn't all too tight. Let's say 180M with the missing item collection, borders and that one spell. I probably won't push it, but it was a nice alteration from the more strict route I use on Reimu. Oh, and you could build the second nonspell graze into this (with a bomb at the first wave of the nonspell and/or good stage cherry collection), but I don't want to do it with Sakuya's movement.

I suppose you could take another jab at it.

It's a very cultured past-time, that reminds of how renaissance people venerated their little greek worlds and stuff.
It's also considered easy peasy lemon squeezy by pro danmaku players, last time i checked it was so.
The characters might be considered minor deities and venerated if you're a pagan, or have occultist inclinations.
There's also the fact that the characters in general are a throwback to magic, especially TH06 ones'.

Ok, I've had enough. Wasted 4 hours and would continue, but I'm too sleepy today. And I already know that I'll just keep trying tommorow instead of studying, which is why I hoped to capture it today in the first place.

How did ZUN come up with this fucking atrocity of a pattern, let alone include it in the game is beyond my comprehension. The thunderballs' movement defies all logic, with them being capable of somehow intercepting you on your way despite following your direction of movement, not to mention them being a little too fucking fast. The worms are nearly constantly on the screen and their movement is erratic and hard to read, which is bad enough, but they just have to accelerate halfway through to screw your reads and if you dodge, then they fucking ELONGATE to stay longer on the screen and make you ram into them when you think your path is clear. U-streaming can only get you so far - if the thunderballs decide to not give you an opening, or you're locked by the worm, you get walled, end of story. Eat your heart out, Recollection of Kinkaku-ji, here comes a new RNG champion. And to add insult to injury, the pattern lasts forever, because you can easily drain half on her HP and then you do next to no damage at all because of all the shit on the screen - with 40 sec timer, there's barely any difference between a timeout and a capture. And if you somehow take out Yoshika, the thunderballs' don't dissipate, so by the time you make it through them, she's back good as new.

Honestly, I always hated the Seiga battle, because of how boring it is, with drawn-out patterns that look the same and grating BGM to boot, but I never felt like I'm going to get a PTSD from it. I never felt like punching ZUN in the face so strong before today.
Oh, and fuck Seiga.

You're bad at making observations if you don't understand the thunderballs' movement. The pattern is very rhythmic. Watch yourself failing until you can attribute certain audio cues to when the bullets change their direction, and use this information to redirect in a consistent fashion.

This game is weird. You just slash everything the fuck away. Large enemy tactic isn't to dodge their attacks, but to CQC their faces and memorize when the lasers are gonna come out. The projectiles are really hard to see because everything on the screen is already either red or yellow. Getting hit drops your multiplier but you can get it back to maximum in .5 seconds. You have a health bar and it regenerates. It's almost euro.

With the attempts lasting rougly 30 seconds, that's around twenty-two hours of playtime. With a single attack that might be a lot, but you must remember that there are a lot of people who have played these games for hundreds, maybe even thousands of hours.

The attack might be designed for those. With a little more experience and feel of comfortability around the patterns.

Did you think of the problem being partially on the players' side at all? No, you did not. Instead of that, you went on and wrote a long text of anger and hate about the game like some sixteen-year old kid.

Like you were told earlier, it's a rather rhythmic attack. Suck it up and keep playing, these games take time and effort to get good at.

I'm one of these people and that spell is still shit.
The fact alone that that there is no other capture of it as Sanae on the internet, because there's no point to using anyone but Youmu (Youmu can attack both Seiga and Yoshika at once) is bad enough, but the point about thuderballs' completely walling you with bad RNG still stands, made infinitely worse by how long the spell is. At least the Lunatic version feels like a joke now, so that'll help a lot with my consistency in Hard runs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRBxEnFD9UY&hd=1

Moving on to another slew of attempts at 1cc Hard, in which I surprisingly make some progress. The only real problem to iron is stage 4, which is a grand champion of UFO tokens that are unreachable without bombing and the entire Nue drop bullshit I might just settle on solving by pause-buffering.

No, you're not one of these people. For more information, refer to >>7744112

The reason there aren't many Sanae captures on the internet is since not many people like to play TD in the first place, and from those few, only a couple tend to use Sanae. (And most of us don't find a single O.D. capture worthwhile enough to make a note online of, two and half years after the initial release of TD)

Also, I can say that the spellcard certainly wasn't meant for Youmu, after testing her out and noticing that she can essentially break the spell, making it pale in comparison to the regular version. Also, I remember not having trouble with that attack when I captured all of the spells in TD, and I was using Reimu.

Anecdotes:
No one should play Normal. People should just grind lunatic, on average a new player should make it to the 4th stage in most games. Then they would try Hard mode to discover it's a lot easier, maybe making it to the last stage. Normal is way too easy.

This is my average experience, anyone who plays normal and cannot beat it without no deaths+ no bombs should feel bad. I also only use Marisa B and in later game Youmu (doesn't matter which one). I tried using Reimu A+B and managed to lunatic clear most games.(homing amulets are OP)

Not to mention it's not an option at all in MoF-UFO with the continue system. And also, 1cc Normal will unlock the Extra stage, which are both difficult enough to make you better and memorizable enough to make constant progress.

The thing is, Touhou *is* the very first STG for thousands of people drawn in by the setting, themes or characters. More often than not, a newcomer *will* have the "holy fuck, people actually play those things!?" reaction. As opposed to score play? Never really got the appeal - I *did* take part in some obscure tournaments that involved score (along with other things like time orb amount or lives left), but never tried my hand at actually posting anything on a scoreboard, because I stand no chance to actually beat any record. What keeps you or other people actually playing for score?

>because I stand no chance to actually beat any record
Why start scoring with the mindset of trying to beat a record? Shouldn't you eventually try to beat it by gradually learning each and every part of the game?

Because we enjoy a game enough to learn it's intricacies beyond survival play.

I referred you to a thread from Autumn 2011. It'd be a small wonder had it not been deleted. Most people would've used the archive, though.

>It's not unheard of to get lucky and beat the harder patterns without losing any hair over it
I'm not claiming I was completely unlucky or anything, but almost everything you've this far claimed about the pattern is wrong. It's not very much a luck-based attack as it is a rhythm game along with some laser sight-reading.

>Other times, you try for hours and hours for no avail. It's a fact of life.
We live by different "facts of life" then.

>I picked up DS on the side - not only makes you better at dodging patterns in general, but is rather fun in a masochistic way. Maybe save for Satori, she's both particularly unfun and difficult.
But 9-7 is the best spell in DS, and actually good for practicing panic dodging. Two of her other attacks are memorization, and the third one is a simple gimmick as far as I remember.

What. Normal (especially stage practice) goes a long way with a certain few players on /jp/. I suppose all activity has long since stopped, but some of the people are still around here to offer a few words or replays if asked nicely.

>going for a shitty route
Well, "shitty route" has the positive side that it is easier to improve than a good route. I can't say much else without more information.

>Ichirin's 3rd nonspell supergraze just goes over my head
Isn't that the new wonky-looking thing with difficult movement? If you have, as you say, a "shitty route", the first thing you need to look for certainly isn't a difficult high-end trick. There are many other attacks to be grazed in an easier way in the game, and idle grazing during stages also plays a role in the scoring for this game.

Oh, but if you don't want to discuss, I won't push the matter any further. I'll look forward to hear more of your process in the threads, though.

iirc he streamed his WR. He also streamed SA a couple times (like 2 or 3 times). The WR was also an overall better run than his finalB score, which would also mean that that one's reasonable. That leaves his IN extra score. The run is solid. But that's about it. He doesn't go anything super hard, the stage route is bad (bad cancels, bomb for PoC...), he didn't even last the full timer on the first nonspell, doesn't graze Hourai Doll. The most remarkable thing is that he captured all spellcards, which might as well have been dumb luck. I don't know how much he played that stage, but it doesn't seem like something really suspicious if you ask me. As of now, he hasn't really shown anything that warrants concern.

Funnily enough, his PoDD runs are probably the most suspicious ones. he never talks about how the plays it, never streams or records it and he's pulled out a run that is inferior to only Zil's runs (I know it's third highest for Chiyuri, but a game over vs a clear and only 1m difference means Sakurei's run was overall better, but he didn't have the endurance to live through Yumemi). So if you want to be suspicious about him, do it for this game.

She *is* head and shoulders above most of the cast (http://hisouten.koumakan.jp/wiki/Diagram)), but her worst shit is 623 (safe, easy to punish escapes with, denies melee and can be repeated mid-air) and Killing Doll on wakeup (guaranteed guard crushes for dirt-cheap spell card), both of which require skills to properly utilize. She's actually pretty bad in shit-tier players' hands. Since my sparring partner abuses her advantages like no tommorow, I did a small write-up on why is she so annoying:

Of course, Hisoutensoku is not really well balanced, so not only Sakuya is not well-liked in high-level gameplay - gotta love Remilia's crossups or corner pressure of Yuyuko and Reisen (the latter of which I sub to match my main of mid-low tier but extremely fun to play Sanae).

Was extremely frustrating, but I finally beat stage 3 of SA on lunatic NMNB. Wind Blowing Down From Mt. Onoe or whatever is scary as shit, sometimes it just wants to kill you, got lucky this time sorta. Also tried with Patchouli and Suika, probably coulda beaten with Patchouli but Yukari it is.
