Take your time. A huge portion of my deaths have been attributed to thinking "I really should do something now". Looking through your inventory takes no game-time, and unless food becomes an issue, you really have nothing to lose by carefully exploring your surroundings.

Don't be overly frugal. Item drops don't suddenly dry up in the end game, so if you have a wand of cold and are being harried by green elves, just blast them.

Identify everything, and make liberal use of naming conventions to tag item types with what you know about them (i.e. a ring called 'jade_200zm_not_lev').

This one is a bit personal, but if you have a favorite race/role combination, stop playing it. Let the RNG pick your character for you. You might have developed a linear model of the game (First I get GDSM. Then I do Sokoban. Then I do the mines. Then I find an altar and sac...), and it's worth it to mix it up.
