The thing i remember the most about Mugen is people trying to outdo each other with broken characters.
HERE IS SHITTY EVIL RYU CLONE 10000 WHO DEALS WAY TOO MUCH DAMAGE AND HAS 100 TIMES MORE HEALTH THAN NORMAL CHARACTERS!
HERE IS CHUCK NORRIS HE HAS NO HITBOX AND KILLS IN ONE HIT!
HERE IS ONI MIKO-Z WHO WINS BEFORE THE BATTLE EVEN STARTS AND ALSO CAN'T BE HURT!
HERE IS DEBUGGER WHO DELETES THE OTHER CHARACTER BEFORE THE MATCH STARTS!

It is, there are still plenty of people still making new characters and tournaments out there and posting them on niconico. It's just that /jp/ doesn't really talk about it.

I can only remember 3 good games :
- a good Saint Seya game
- a good Kenshiro game, but the AI was fucking broken (and I liked it)
- an excellent KoF ultimate game with likely ALL characters from the KoF/ Capcom Vs Snk games. Shin Akuma was broken though.

You download the MUGEN game by itself. Then you start searching for characters/stages/BGM/etc. and put those in their respective MUGEN folders. After that, you turn the game on and start playing, or just put it in AI mode.

Japan just collect Mugen characters and duke it out via CPU battles. Their AI was designed for it.

Mugen makes no sense most of the time.

Someone even has made Reisen and Utsuho for Mugen before their appearance in fighting games.
I'm not sure how to feel about that. Mugen is quite old, that's for sure.

Is there like a big place where all the characters are put together? Even Super Deep Throat has a semi-official compilation of characters. Being worst than a game about blowjob in this regard is grade A Japanese style "Let's hide everything to dirty poor gajin plebs" ridiculous.

There are lots of MUGEN videos on nicovideo and it's still popular there. Most are some form of AI tournament battles, usually with some added gimmicks.

I did some character editing recently and it sure is hard, even though I have a lot of programming background.

How many chars you got, nerds? Ever filled up one of those huge character select screens completely?

There are many western Mugen sites that provide download links for characters and stages. There are tons of them.

Also, westerners or non-Japanese who make or rip characters for Mugen are just as much as Japanese, so it's not really a "game for Japanese only" where the materials are secluded.

They're hiding stuff from themselves just as much as hiding from others. For non-Japanese speakers it's just a much bigger problem because it's almost impossible to navigate the maze of sites without understanding the language.

It's actually sad that all the stuff can be so hard to find because there are a lot of really cool works out there.

I wish there are more of those well-made HnK Touhou characters. There are only REIsen in OP pic and Toki Hakurei so far which are made by same author. The others are not as well made and mostly jush meh. I wonder if the author only made those two or there's more but he just hide it.

the size plays a big role here. sdt's stuff is few kilobytes big, mugen stuff can go into multiple megabytes and there's over a thousand times more stuff made for it.

that'd screw up any free hosting within days/weeks, even paid ones would run out of bandwidth limit fast, most of the mugen players have no taste and have the habit of downloading everything, shit included.

I think Debugger was the cheapest in the end, though it does not work with the later versions. It essentially already won before the screen went to the battle screen by messing with the opponent's root file. They'll be read as nonexistent which means you win.

It's extremely stupid.

Mugen is also responsible for some weird pairings.

I think it's a fun little game. If you can just keep crappy cheat characters out of your game it can be really enjoyable. It has some problems, but what doesn't?

If you want, you can even collect overpowered characters and pit them against each other. It sometimes makes for interesting battles and there are in fact entire tournaments dedicated to this kind of thing. Of course, even in this class you will have characters that are too broken to fit in.

Generally speaking though, you have to be selective which characters you want to use. Of course there are a lot of overpowered or impossible ones, but there are also a lot of really good and interesting characters. That's what you get when you make it possible for people to make their own. If anything, it is difficult to have proper balance in MUGEN because there are so many different characters. Already the fact that there are so many different game systems, each with its own gimmicks, makes it inevitable that some characters are stronger than others.

it's rather boring unless you play against somewhat. i found saltybet kind of amusing for a while, but yeah.

I pit other 2hus against each other more than I actually play the game. I think Mugen is more novelty than a good fighting game, but I hope it's gets more popular.

I don't keep cheap characters but there are still plenty of broken AI characters in my slot, and sometimes I spend a whole day try to beat one of those cheap AI using my favorite character like an autist.

I usually use Melty Blood characters which are easier againts cheap AI (since each character has Eclipse moon with broken moves, though I don't use it if I really want to test my skill, and Unlimited Mode if I'm really got buttdevastated and wanted revenge) but sometimes I used characters like Weiss and P3 hero which are rather hard to use.

The terms got messed up badly over time.

became Potato =Decent characters that lose due to the bullshit matchup they faced.
Mexican = Bad AI compensated by Cheap stats
became Mexican = Any move or combo that does more than 10% damage

God, I'd spend countless hours searching the web, even venturing into foreign sites, looking for "obscure" characters and stages I saw on YT. Characters like Ryu and Akuma were the fucking worst. There were so many absurd edits and copies of them I could never find the one I was looking for. I don't want Mega Chaos God Ryu. I want SF3 Ryu. No, not THAT SF3 Ryu, I want the one with the stun meter. No, not THAT stun meter... Holy shit.
