I think this is the only appropriate board to discuss this topic, because most of the anon who has the JP flag on /int/ is proxyfags anyway.
How much accurate is Japan culture and society portrayed in manga/anime/LN/VN/etc? And in the media?
This question only occur to me recently because the people I know who love Japan think that Japan is a paradise for education, humanity, work, culture, environment, etc etc. Most of the information they got is from media like newspaper.
But as far as I know, in most of the seinen manga the society was portrayed in a rather shitty and corrupt way. And if their society and living conditions are too good then I don't think the suicide rate is that high anyway.
I know any country has its pros and cons, but if what they present in the newspapers is true than Japan is too good for a country, or they just excel in hiding their ugly truths from the world.
Actually I just want to know more about Japanese culture, but I don't think the mainstream media accurately describes it, but I think the manga/animu etc is a little exaggerated, and then I'm confused. I should know better if I live in Japan though, too bad I don't.

Actually it's pretty accurate. Just remove the cute/drama parts of the anime, thus the interesting parts, and you have a good description of Japanese society.

Fun fact : most of the animes labeled as "dramas", "dark" or something are actually the ones close to reality. It just shows that people see their life as an ongoing dark drama. Normies at least.

/jp/ isn't about Japanese culture. Just because you mention
>manga/anime/LN/VN/etc
doesn't make it related.

Realize that most anime, manga, visual novels, etc. are a form of escapism. Because real Japanese society sucks.

It's not a paradise for work, that's one thing I know for sure. Japanese companies, especially older established ones, are highly bureaucratic from what I hear. As an employee you're expected to coddle to your superiors' every whim and work extremely hard, and in jap culture, meeting people's expectations carries a heavy weight. I'm sure you could see this element of jap culture in some media.

In fact, I'm pretty sure it's due to shitty work environments that there's a high number of NEETs in Japan. Arguably you can even associate it with the otaku and the success of otaku-targeted goods and services, due to the need of escapism from work stress or something like that.

If you want to know more about the problems of japanese culture though I'm sure there's a wikipedia article for that. Don't come here, we're here to imitate the escape from it.

I heard somewhere that majority of the workers just pretend to work harder than they actually do.

Yes but people always say that the Japanese have to work very long days but in reality they just kill time until the boss leaves. That's what makes working in Japan tedious, not the amount of work they do.
