Okay, since it was posted in a hijacked topic, I'm positing it in its own topic to get some better answers

When I was reading through the dialogue for the various games, most of the boss dialogue consists of, "Hello, I am <name> and I am a <profession>. Why are you here? Let's fight!"

Of course, there are some exceptions here and there, but it actually doesn't say too much about the personalities or backstories of any of the characters. You'll get a vague idea of, "Oh, she has a playful personality" or "Oh, she's a bit stupid" but the dialogue never really goes into any detail.

So the question is, how do you, personally, form the character's personality in your head? Do you solely rely on already existing fan-adaptations of the character? Or do you solely rely on ZUN's words? Do you take those adaptations and spice them up with your own ideas? Do you take their theme music, abilities, and clothing into account?

Touhou is just a fighting game turned into a scrolling shooter.

Everything you will ever see on /jp/ or any Touhou "fansite" (ugh) is fanon stuff.

Canon is so laughably pointless it shouldn't even be mentioned.

There's the Silent Sinner in Blue manga that's canon, but overall it's pretty fucking shitty.

Touhou personalities are basically memes. Someone somewhere just drew a pic and said "lol hay gaiz wouldn't it be funni if marisa was a bitch lol" and then everyone jumped on the band wagon. Repeat ad naseum for any other Touhou which will come into existence.

doujinshi, a bit of "canon" folklore (which is very lacking but this is what makes the appeal for a lot of fans I guess) and own imaginations/ideas.

I used to think Utsuho was completely batshit insane due to her power and wanting to conquer the world (and also the HOLY SHIT I'M FUCKED music), until I read about the birdbrain thing.
So, I guess a bit of each.

Goddamnit. I already posted it in the other topic, but I'll post it here too.

>Do you take their theme music, abilities, and clothing into account?
YES. I'm one of those faggots that do that, so a lot of my views of the characters are significantly different from a lot of other people's stuff. However, I do make a ton of exceptions, like with Yukari, Yuyuko to some extent, Rumia, and others.

It doesn't mean I don't like other people's depictions though, since I do find the differences interesting most of the time, but I just don't like it when it's too outland-ish or silly (of course, based on my own opinion). Probably the reason why I dislike a bunch of Touhou-based memes and "living" Yukkuri.

For me, PMiSS did a good deal to strengthen already preexisting ideas in my head.

If people just went by the game dialogue, Alice wouldn't be portrayed as an emotional train wreck. I guess it's a mix of canon stuff - game dialogue, official comics and books included - and all the meme/fan-created stuff. More the latter.

Well, of course, but I meant you, personally. Surely, you have some idea of a character that isn't commonly portrayed in fanon, but doesn't quite match canon descriptions either?

None that I can think of, really, though I'm sure some of my ideas about certain characters are different from the fan and the canon-based stuff.

When reading, I'm happy with whatever so long as it's done well. When writing, I go mostly with my own ideas influenced somewhat by what there already is.

>> No.1167720

I mainly rely on extra/stage scenarios (extra usually gives a lot of back story to 1 or 2 characters), fanon and the two books ZUN put out (even if they are filled with errors).

I guess it comes to personal taste too, for example different people will obviously see different characters in a different light.
