In the world of Gensokyo, where weaker youkai are routinely enslaved to bigger, meaner youkai, and everything is very Darwinian in spirit, it amused me to no end that an author decided to roll with it and give the best and most horrifying possible end for Meiling.

Meiling. Eating sex-slave children. To become the strongest youkai of Gensokyo. That's something that is completely possible given the general framework of the eastern wonderland, though of course improbable. I grinned like a madman to that.

The rest of the doujin was forgettable in every aspect.

I dunno though, as far as I could tell skimming through it, it looks like she meets a bunch of the current Touhou cast before she even joins the SDM? These stories that try to do character backgrounds and end up skewing lots of details always kind of irk me.

I enjoy how she's generally portrayed as a very nice, pleasant person, despite being a Youkai. Her PMiSS article has humans who wandered to the SDM not even being able to tell she wasn't human. She's also an odd mix of laid back, but very dutiful when the situation demands it.

There's also some appeal to her being such an underdog. Assuming Chi works like it does in other settings (everyone's got it, just takes training to harness it), she doesn't seem to have ANY special Youkai abilities at all. This leaves her almost hysterically outclassed compared to most of the characters in the series.

Unfortunately these traits altogether make her a huge target for being picked on in the fanon, despite there not being any sign of it in anything official.

What's written on her cap doesn't necessarily describe what she is. Also, dragon is an extremely powerful species in Gensokyo.
It's less likely that a middle-class gate guard hired by foreigner vampire is a dragon youkai.

That's only a very vague and largely baseless fan theory. Generally used by artists either for the sake of changing things up a bit, or to give Meiling an extra couple points in badass as Dragons generally considered some serious shit in mythology.

There's some minor correlation with her to the Hong type of dragon, but its loose at best.

That's almost the point. The only dragon-related things we've seen in the canon are the one Kasen summons in WaHH, and the Great Dragon who helped create Gensokyo and hasn't been seen since. Other than those we've only gotten references to the Dragon Palace really.

It somewhat lends them an air of mystery, and almost being above all this silly shit going on in some magic bubble in Japan.

They're also highly regarded entities in Chinese and Japanese mythology, on top of the fact that dragons are almost always regarded as one of the strongest types of creatures in nearly every fantasy setting they're included in.

This actually makes it so I almost don't like it when they involve dragons with Meiling, because it would be such a ridiculous jump in character and power, that you'd have to rekajigger so many things to fit around it.

Eastern dragons are godly beings of the highest calibre in the Chinese mythology. They are considered the most powerful and divine creatures of the mythology. Dragons are actually more powerful and more holy than the average god in the Chinese pantheon.

Gensokyo's chief deity is a Dragon, though he was never seen since the foundation of Gensokyo iirc.

If China is a fully grown Chinese Dragon, that makes her at least last stage tier, maybe even ex-tier. It's improbable, but it's actually one of the things that is actually funny to talk about when discussing with non-autistic people whining MUH CANON every words.

Kasen's dragon is a child. A baby. Even putting aside Kasen's powerlevel (which seems off the chart), it's only a child, not a fully grown dragon.

Lesser dragon creatures are more or less a product of the west. The Chinese mythology doesn't have weak dragon. Maybe Gensokyo has, but we still haven't seen one in canon.

Well there are a few western elements as central characters such as Remilia so it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say there may be the classical Hexapod dragon out of the west around, or maybe a Lindwurm (like Fafnir) or a Wyrm. Then again, Meiling is quite obviously as Chinese as it gets and therefore probably isn't one of them.

All the various mythical beings in Touhou have gone into recluse, because humanity doesn't need/want/believe in them anymore. All the dragons are probably either hanging out in the Dragon Palace or just sleeping in the deep places of the earth.

As for Kasen and her pet dragon, we don't have enough details on either of them to make any assumptions there.

There's a doujin in three parts, which features the SDM, Yukari and Eirin, ending with the breaking of every single one of the participant except Meiling, and then Meiling taking the leadership of the SDM and eating the babies of everyone else in order to become the strongest in Gensokyo.

Some find that awesome. Other find that absolutely disgusting. I think it's the ultimate proof of love toward Meiling, wishing her happy, well, successful and safe. The others don't seem to love Meiling at all. What a pitiful bunch of fake fans.

Her carefree attitude possibly make her gets along well with Flandre.

Imagine her first meeting with Remilia. There must be some kind of impactful backstory between them. They seems to be really close in the fighting game.

Now if you consider the possibility that Meiling has been working for Remilia for a long time and possibly her first reliable servant then it can show how much her relationship with SDM residents.
