That innocent Rika turns into Frederica Bernkastel and keeps trying to avoid her fate and figure out who the culprit is.

I guess it was a metaphor. That's why Frederica never wondered who Bernkastel was at the beggining of Minagoroshi. She never had a conversation with someone else, she was just talking to herself after merging with Bernkastel, free from her human limitations.

It's not a theory. Everything I said was strongly implied in Minagoroshi, Matsuribayashi and Saikoroshi.

Think of Bernkastel as a pool of memories. Furude Rika is an empty glass. Frederica Bernkastel that same glass after you fill it with Bernkastel's water. When the glass is broken, that water returns to the ocean, waiting for Hanyuu to fill a new glass with it. Bernkastel grows bigger every time that happens, because Frederica gathers more water/memories in each kakera.

If you're saying that the closed catbox makes a witch, then Bern certainly had that, her escape was just one possible state in the box, but since it's usually closed by the military, it isn't not collapsed, depending on what happened in the real world (of which Matsuribayashi is almost certainly not).

It's implied that she forgot everything about her Bernkastel persona after a peaceful nap, so she could live a normal life, but I think it was left to interpretation. Can Hanyuu even do that? I think Rika simply decided to treat it all as a dream and slowly forget about it.

It was a pretty weird game when you think about it:

In Umineko, Beatrice used fake kakera called "gameboards" that she created with her magic. In Higurashi, Featherine and Lambda played their little game using real kakera.

In Umineko, Battler and Beatrice actually fought each other. In Higurashi, Featherine got bored of the game before it even began and abandoned her main piece (Hanyuu), leaving her almost completely useless. Lambdadelta didn't even have an opponent, she just won over and over again. And then, one of the most important pieces became a witch (who was still trapped inside the game) and tried random shit until a miracle happened.

There are two things I don't get, though. What was the original goal of the game before Featherine decided to abandon it?

I think Hanyuu was intended to have a very important role as Featherine's piece. It had nothing to do with trying to keep Rika "alive". Rika herself was just Takano's goal, a plot device rather than a piece. I don't know.

My second question: Did Featherine ever return to the game? Is that why Hanyuu was so much more powerful in Matsuribayashi, to the point of becoming a human piece? Lambda said that she lost because she "allowed Bern to place her pieces as she wished in the last game". Does that mean Lambda got bored of winning, showed herself to Bernkastel for the first time, and told her to find a favorable kakera where Rika's friend don't go crazy and Akasaka comes to Hinamizawa?
