Breen's EDICT is only good for first-glance definitions and certain phrases/expressions, but Space ALC/Eijiro would do you a lot better for examples of real use and interpretation.

Of course, Goo Dict and Yahoo Dict give you the useful Daijirin (and Yahoo, Daijisen as well), so those are worth keeping on hand. They also have J-E/E-J dictionaries for additional help. I'm not sure if Koujien or Shougakukan's Kokugo Daijiten is available online, because those would cover all the bases.

IMHO dictionaries are a bit like sponsored news reports. They all have their faults and are often biased but they help you to see the bigger picture when combined together. I don't think "esp. the far east" would confuse anyone.

I'd say rather say (line from the edict file):

待望 [たいぼう] /(n,vs) expectant waiting/(P)/

As I said, despite it's crappyness in some areas EDICT is a huge downloadable text file / database and is useful for random trivias or writing scripts on your own. I'd say most entries are pretty good. 85% good is still good overall. I wouldn't recommend not using it only because some lines look weird.

EDICT and COMPDIC (http://gjiten.sourceforge.net/dictfiles/compdic)) and http://page.freett.com/voltes/yogo.html also contain a lot internet slang terms. Googling ネット用語 may be also good start IMHO... and you can always write one yourself LOL (If you do post a link on /jp/ plz lol).

I've actually looked into just that since it seems like a valuable tool for translating scans. But from what I could tell it pretty much is research level on the whole thing and many scientific texts talk about how their method is 80% successful and does like 8 images per second.

I was interested in trying to make my own but I've still not figured out how you'd go about to match kanji. But it obviously has to exist a method since they are already selling penscanners that can handle Japanese.

Though nowadays, I mostly gave up and just drop it without googling. I used to keep a file with ideas that passed the google test, but I can't recall where it is and beagle was a bitch last time, as well as tracker, strigi and whatever the fuck people keep coming up with this week.
