The Tamagotchi is a virtual pet made by Bandai that was originally introduced in 1996 in Japan. The company later released international models, and the egg-shaped toy became a worldwide hit in the late 90s and early 2000s. Since then, over 44 Tamagotchi models have been released, including several only available in Japan. In early 2013, Bandai released an enhanced version of the original 1996 Tamagotchi as a free iOS and Android app named "Tamagotchi L.i.f.e." to great fanfare and reviews.
