It didn't idolize Japan or Japanese culture enough.
They are an extremely proud nation. If the movie didn't have this than it's just another gaijin movie.
It didn't do any of that either.
It just had gaint robots.
It didn't have Japan as the shining force of justice or enough main characters.
For goodness sake; they had a black man save Japan and adopt a little false stero-typical Japanese girl who falls in love with a white man.

That's some multiculturalism that's not going to fly.

Weird. I loved it. It's the mecha movie I've been waiting for ever since I was a kid. The "drifting" concept was also a nice touch. It allowed for deeper characterization without explicitly showing it.

It's not even all that westernized other than production values and characterizations. All the "otaku" stuff is heavily Japanese, particularly cinematography and the way it plays out.

I enjoyed watching the movie despite the political messages, but my statement stands firm with what I first said. I wasn;t waiting my entire childhood to watch a mech movie. I like mech more than other people I vastly know. I think they should have put a Japanese director in the director's chair.

Well, they were quite cartoony so it felt anime-esque, particularly of something like G Gundam, or anything dealing with foreigners, really. It's nothing like real robot shows, but I didn't expect it to be that. For all the stuff that really mattered, it felt "Japanese." Though I'm not that familiar with kaiju other than a few old Godzilla movies and maybe Power Rangers, visually, I felt like I had seen it all somewhere before.

That's honestly why I felt Del Toro did a fine job. It's difficult to balance the disparities in culture and audience. I can feel his passion, but it's obscured by the need to appeal to mainstream American audiences. As a result it didn't do so hot here.

This can be applied to any other industries in the world. The cinema of Japan is quite crappy nowadays in my opinion.

>It's difficult to balance the disparities in culture and audience. I can feel his passion, but it's obscured by the need to appeal to mainstream American audiences.
I can definitely appreciate his passion but it is also probably the reason i hate this movie (and him). From IMDB top ten in the US this week six seem to be part of an existing franchise.

And from boxofficemojo.com the top ten grossing films in the US for 2013 only four aren't part of a franchise and I'm being generous by not counting adaptations or the new Wizard of OZ.
With the same rules 2012 gives us three originals, the two which aren't adaptations having Seth MacFarlane or Pixar's name on them.
2011 gives us none unless we are very generous and don't count the Avengers-filmverse as a franchise yet.
Though 2010 gave us five (four if you don't count Alice in Wonderland (2010)).
2009 gave us between four and six depending on whether you count RDJ Holmes and JJ Trek as part of an existing franchise.

Deeper than most Hollywood blockbuster fare. This is mostly due to the "drifting" concept. Without it, they would be nothing more than shallow caricatures. Guys, I've figured out how to make a movie about white people loving Japan but have it appeal to both Western AND Japanese audiences.
What if instead of there being a Japanese love interest for the white protagonist, there are TWO protagonists? One is Japanese and the other is Murrikan. And they're both male. And the story is about them having to work together and growing together as total bros over the course of the movie (no homo).
Also, there would be no love interest. There would be like, two ambiguous ones that you'd expect to get together with the two protagonists at the end, but twist, they're both lesbians. Japan would probably eat that shit up, and so would America because who the fuck doesn't like lesbians? (I'm not /u/ I swear).
Then you throw in some shit that everyone likes, like Japanese folklore and robots and lolis or something and have it take place in a vaguely WWI-era European town.
