It's actually not just that Japanese people can't pronounce L and R sounds; most Japanese people cannot distinguish between the English L sound and R sound, even when they are pronounced correctly by a native English speaker.

A Japanese guy once asked me to help him with English listening, and I said "Okay, I will say either 'rack', with an 'r', or 'lack', with an 'l', and you tell me which word I just said," and I then proceeded to test him and he seriously could not tell which was which. This guy was a decent English speaker too, and I don't have a strong accent or anything and I was putting stress on the L and R sounds.

And the thing is, when you really start thinking about "rack" and "lack" as simple sounds, and not as words, you realize that, even when pronounced correctly, they indeed sound almost exactly like the same sound, save for a nearly inaudible difference in the attack of the consonant. The difference is minuscule, but it's something that we native English speakers are so trained to listen for that we have trouble comprehending when people cannot hear it.

I guess the closest thing I can compare to would be some language that has tones like Chinese, and to native speakers different intonation sounds like completely different words, but non-native speakers can't even hear the difference.

Your average English word has 4-5 definitions, and the reason Japanese can have homonyms like that is because the writing conveys meaning and pronunciation while latin-shit just conveys pronunciation.

In other words you're so stupid/ignorant that it's difficult for you, but it's just you. Similar to how McAuthur genuinely believed the Japanese couldn't read their language after American occupation, but it turns out Japanese literacy rates were higher than western ones.

Why is L and R always the one that everyone knows and jokes about? It's not the only blurring between sounds. For example, Fujiwara no Mokou is actually Huziwara no Mokou in the game, and the letters sound the same when pronounced in Japanese.
