Serious question, /jp/. Hear me out.

I started taking some mahjong tutorials, and the game seems pretty interesting. I never finished Akagi, but now I'll definitely have to. Because I'm that big of a faggot.

Anyway, onto my question: which set of rules should I learn? I mean, which do people use more in Amerikkka? I've been using the set that's apparently the most popular: the Hong Kong rules.

From what I've read about the general differences in mahjong rules, Western mahjong is nothing like Japanese; it's all about memorizing a bunch of irregular patterns, choosing the hand you're closest to completing, then hoping to get lucky. There's hardly any kind of strategy since there's so little overlap between possible hands and thus no real decisions to make.
