The thing about Gold/Silver/Crystal is that they added things to do beyond your actions. The world in Gen 1 was static and nothing happened unless you did something.

You can set the text to fast and turn off battle animations.

It's still slow as fuck, though. That's why the first games haven't aged well. Everyone with an emulator holds the speed-up button.

I think they're games you really need to play on an actual Game Boy and take it easy. You can be cooking dinner, watching television, or even playing with your friends while you're also battling monsters.

Also it adds an interesting meta-game element. I'm one of those people who never buys anything from shops in RPGs, but in the first Pokemon games I always buy repels and stuff, and only fight higher level monsters with a weakness I can exploit. It seems to be the most efficient way of levelling.

But fuck that bag limit.

I can't stand playing it anymore. I know everything about it. Everything. Now if you're talking about the remakes, I don't like those that much. If only they had that proper level scaling in the original games... then they would have been perfect. Otherwise it's a borefest one-shotting everything in Kanto until you can finally battle Blue (okay, Green) and Red. It's a good thing the Kanto music is nice at least.

>> No.11097670

The problem with Crystal was finding those fucking roaming Pokemon. I hate mechanics like that, because there's not really any strategy, it's just random. Like sure, finding/catching/hitting Pokemon was a random chance, but this was like, meta-random.

I tried for hours once (with the repel trick and wandering back and forth between two areas), then gave up and asked /vp/. Someone said something like Fly to the first town until he was two tiles across, then he'd meet me one tile across. Worked after five minutes, but now I can't seem to do it ever again.

>> No.11097675

>proper level scaling

For a second there I thought you meant this as in "game area resizing", which really ticked me off.

Basically, for whatever reason, they noticed that some areas in Red/Green/Blue didn't exactly match the game world. For example, the underground paths and that Diglett tunnel weren't long enough. Did they shrug it off as a video game abstraction? Hell no, they made that shit five times as long.

>> No.11097683

>>11097670
It's more fun that way. Where's the thrill in tracking down those elusive roaming Pokemon with an app within a minute? They are supposed to be difficult to track down. Overdoing it with randomness is the only way to simulate that kind of feeling in a game like Pokemon.

Pokemon is fun because of all the technical stuff. Not like stats and IVs or whatever, but how things are stored in memory and manipulated. And some of the bugs are hilarious, like that rounding/shifting error that makes Focus Energy not work (it was supposed to increase the critical hate rate, but it actually did nothing or made it a 0/511 chance).

>> No.11097697

Randomness in Pokemon is what makes them addictive. It's the same design philosophy that makes slot machines and MTG booster packs addictive. If the Pokemon just visibly walked on the map, none of them would be more valuable than the other.

As a kid I remember laughing at that. Like I went through and thought, "Okay, now where's Viridian Forest?"
Then I realized and it was hilarious.

Were they bothered about the flow of the game, or did they really just run out of space? They already had forest tiles, they couldn't excise an area and just remake the area from R/G/B?

>> No.11097705

No, I only play the originals. What I often do to have fun at Kanto after beating Johto is to leave all my Pokemon at the Storage system and technically start anew in it with a single lv5 like a Larvitar. It's challenging.

I suppose that's true.

Though they are on the map, it's just tedious when they warp somewhere else.

No friends to trade pokemon. That's also the reason why I avoid using pokemon that involve trading to evolve.

I don't like the look of the new games. They're too crisp and science fictiony.

The original games felt more "humble" and Japanese, I guess.

Because I had no friends as autistic as me, or at least enough to find the whole Pokemon collecting thing extremely cool. I did get all the possible Pokemon in Blue, though.

I like watching speedruns of the first two generation games.

This was fun to watch, even though the game screwed him over at the end (but apparently he beat it off-camera shortly afterwards).

Also which one of you nerds was on the couch with the Sanae fumo?

They coded gen 1 directly in assembly language, I think. It's a miracle that some form of Missingno isn't lurking behind every corner.

I needed less than ten to complete it in Silver when I was 8. Then the battery died tragically. Never had a GBA until way later. My introduction to the third generation was R/S Pinball. Emulated Ruby shortly thereafter but it didn't suck me in that much. I think I had more fun with the former, actually.

I loved the fourth generation - but the addition of the GTS made the task of completing one's Pokedex really trivial and mechanical. The thrill in doing it during the first and second generations was because it was all local. I'm aware that Japan already had it during the second generation, though. Also around the time D/P came out I found about natures, EVs, and IVs, and that further discouraged me from continuing post-game. Suddenly, all of my Pokemon were imperfect. I miss training everything I caught in Silver like they were the best possible Pokemon. Even if their values were still there. As long as they were hidden.

Then you might as well just use a GameShark. Using VBALink is cheating. Going outside, finding friends, and then trading with them is part of the game. This is like sequence breaking.

I play it mostly on phones and similar, though. First thing I do whenever I get a new phone is find a way to emulate GBC.

I actually completed it in Touhoumon Emerald, though that involved cheats since you can't encounter everything. The game gave you three Touhous you already own as a reward.

I was, and it's an actual thing to be afraid of glitches. They have this discussion on /x/ every now and then. There's something really freaky to me about going beyond what's controlled and intended in games.

I don't believe having other people as friends is required to consider it "not cheating". Using VBA Link with myself is just the same asplaying both games with two real GBA.

I had this, it came with Nintendo Official Magazine (or it was a special edition of it or something).

It was the best thing ever. It had the full-colour concept of every Pokémon, where to find them, what moves they could learn, etc. It was like Bulbapedia before Bulbapedia.

But my favourite part was that it had the origin of each Pokémon's name ("Ekans" is "snake" backwards, you guys), sometimes with information on the original Japanese name or what the Pokémon was originally going to be called. I loved all that, I think it's why I got into etymology and toponymy when I was older.

For anyone who cares, there's a poster of earlier names here:

Some of the foreign Pokemon names are great too. Akwakwak and Kraboss are my favorites.

Perfect example of an off-topic but "let them have their fun" thread ruined by overzealous moderation.

The problem with the "let them have their fun" policy is that people take it as an invitation to shitpost.

A Counter-Strike thread would obviously be off-topic, but almost nobody would give a shit about a single thread. Except that one guy who responds by making a TF2 thread, a Battlefield thread, a Halo thread, a Quake thread, a Tribes thread, and so on and so forth until somebody is forced to do something about it.

>>11097813,1
Then you're letting the shitposters win.

When some bitter Aspie comes along and says "Hey guys, this is a LEAGUE OF LEGENDS thread because apparently VIDEO GAMES like POKEMON are allowed now!!! xDD", the janitor should only delete his thread to troll him into the stratosphere. He'll get butthurt and shitpost some more, but that's life. If there wasn't some off-topic thread on the front page, he'd probably be in the VN thread pretending translated games aren't allowed, or in the VNTS thread complaining that the original post misuses the quoting feature.
