Shit, I always run out of bombs/mana. The problem is that my party 1 cannot even kill the phase 1 boss (usually I switch around 50%). That means my main party spends lots of mana/bombs before I get to phase 3.

You can't really allow yourself that.
Optimally, phase 2 should be spent by getting them to near-death, swap to party 2, get buffs going, and start the last phase, while Youmu prepares to slay a god.
You really need to blow everything you have on the boss.

Yeah, looks like my current strategy doesn't work.
I think my party 1 is not doing enough damage just because I'm undergeared. I can't craft any end-game weapon/armour because I didn't get any special material drop. And I have only 2 Iron out of 5 for Kusanagi (I heard you needed 25 before expansion). I guess I have to return and grind a little bit.

I beat the boss without grinding 25 iron for the Kusanagi. If Youmu has one of her better weapons, she can do it.

For the first phase i did most of my damage with Marisa and Patchouli + Nitori's chasers.

In the end i mostly died if the boss decided to spam vortex in it's final phase.

The aggro with tank/dps/heals doesn't seem fixed on the tank 100% of the time. I would estimate to be 50% aggro on tank and 50% on the rest. It makes it interesting, but still get to incorporate the t/d/h element. I have Reimu/Aya+Marisa/Sanae as my formation.

I beat the final boss without kusanagi nor mederoa.

It was my first try when getting past the first phase so I've only ever fought her second and third stages once.

Aya dodge tanking, Reimu, Marisa, Mokou, and Satori as the first party. Fujiyama Volcano phase 1 for victory is pretty much it. Phase 1 is fairly easy to survive with a proper Satori and Reimu.

Alice tanking, Youmu, Byakuren, Sanae, and Patchouli on second phase. I think I got pretty damn lucky as a vortex that actually hit Youmu during that phase only removed her elemental resistance self buff. 3 satellite slashes and the final boss was defeated with Doujigiri.

The first party should be capable of taking out the first phase entirely on their own. I did it within 3 cycles/18 rounds in which I had Mokou fujiyama Lithos every turn she was attackable.

I replaced useless Sanae with Satori. Better healer (since she's less dependant on bombs), can spam magic reflect buff every other turn, does some decent damage during phase 3 with shadow flare (around 4k with Byakuren's +INT buff). To accommodate with the loss of Sanae's resurrection abilities I placed Mokou as the commander. Also I equipped Youmu with RES necklace and armour to withstand fucking Vortexes.
Without Mokou party 1 couldn't even take away 30% of HP from phase 1 boss. But whatever, party 2 killed everyone without any problems. Satori is awesome, I don't regret spending so much time learning skills for her. To >>11046707 who doesn't like her: get better tastes.

It's not like you can just put Satori in your party and she magically saves the day. She has the lowest base stats in the game and 0 skills after level 13. Without huge time investment she's the most useless character in the game. And even with all those learned skills I couldn't find place for her during most of the boss fights. But well, whatever, it's stupid to think everyone will like my favourite touhou. Well, at least you don't dislike really essential characters in this game like Alice... oh wait..

Wow, it took me 7 months to beat this game (65 hours according to the in-game timer). When I started this game I knew little to nothing about the touhou. I didn't know who Sanae or Nitori is and I though that Patchouli is Remilia's sister. Basically this game was the reason I became the touhou fan.

Do you see these stars under monsters base stats? They are monster's resists (if you check this pic >>11048083, you'll see that they correspond to all physical attacks). It's a good thing to check monster's weaknesses/resists in youkai encyclopaedia after you've defeated them.

Get the single target spells from mage fairies in SDM and forest. If you want a mass-damage spell, flame from various stuff in hell or frost from the ice enemies in forest would work.

Element modifiers are calculated before defense applies. Defense straight up subtracts from your damage value. If an enemy has a really high defense value, you can somewhat pierce it, if you hit their elemental weakness, if the multiplier can make it that much stronger.

Regarding types.
Dragons tend to have great 4 elements modifiers, with usually a high PDEF, try to hit with Light/Dark/Mystic.
Foreign Gods usually are angels and demons, often weak to dark and light, respectively. They also tend to have divine barrier.
Spirits are usually elementals, their weakness is usually obvious.
Giants seem to be weak to stab mostly, but they do vary quite a bit.
Transcendants are extremely varied, if you're having trouble with mind flayers, hit them with stab, the only magic that'll work is Lightning.
The various fairy & co warriors and magicians are often weak to dark.
Tsukumogami are always immune to light and dark.
Birds are weak to lightning.
Beasts usually weak to fire.
Reptiles usually weak to water.
Undead are usually weak to fire and light.
Insects are usually weak to water.
Youkai types are best exorcised with light.
Aquatics usually have a weakness to fire and/or lightning, if they're slimes, it's fire and water.

Had a weird glitch yesterday during the Play with Flan quest. I started the battle but forgot to adjust my party so i had to run away pretty much on the first turn. After changing my party i wanted to fight again but a generic enemy ran into me first. After killing the generics the Quest Completed message played and i got one of Sakuya's materials. However, i could still fight Flan now and complete the quest like normal. I basically got an extra item. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I can't seem to recreate that glitch but at least i finally had enough material to actually make an endgame character specific armor now.

That is a well known bug. People use it alot when farming for character materials. You run from the initial encounter and if you notice the boss will chase you, but never initiate contact. You walk through and just keep touching the normal spawns around her and can collect multiple items as each kill counts as a quest completion.

Mokou's damage is in her bombs, and keep in mind... Her attacks are physical! It uses her PATK and enemies' PDEF for calculation! This is quite rare and allows you to completely wreck some enemies as elemental damage is expected to be magical.

So I have tried playing this game. Running the game natively seems to work perfectly fine, albeit in Japanese which I cannot read. Patching it up to 'Weekend' works fine as well. However when I try to apply the English translation .pak's the game will continues to crash to desktop instead. Obviously keeping the game from running in a playable manner.

Normally this shouldn't be an issue in the sense that I'd be perfectly capable of troubleshooting this. Thanks. Issue was that the game wasn't patched to 3.01 as required per the translation patch. The patcher in question didn't actually work and I hadn't noticed, leaving the game in 3.0.

Is there a list somewhere of the enemy sprite references for this game? I know those two are very similar to Romancing SaGa monsters. I've seen a couple sprites that looked like Final Fantasy ones, but those might be pretty obvious to most people.

Am I missing something, or are a lot of character specific weapons a waste materials?

Reimu's are balanced between physical and magic, but I've never needed to have her built for both at the same time, so it's more effective to use either a sword or staff.

Sanae does mediocre damage at best even when she's completely specced for it, and you need her more for buffs than anything else, so it seems you're better off giving her a good slayer or status effect dagger.

Byakuren is in the same boat as Sanae. I guess the barrier on her high tier scrolls is nice for keeping her alive without Alice in your party, but I've never needed to do that, so I've never crafted anything for her other than the +25 IND scroll.

Satori, Marisa, and Patchy can get more base magic attack from staves, as well as more additional magic attack from staff growth than of their specific weapons. I suppose getting more physical attack or mana regen can be nice early on, but by the mid game, I had more than enough MP to make it to healing circles while full clearing every map.

And then there's Alice, who never gets to do anything but cast parrar, hourai, or french dolls, so you might as well just stick your best defensive sword on her.

Reimu's gohei's give boosts to amulet and spirit damage, and usually some other nice effect. Worth it.
Sanae's snakes are for the status effects and occasionally the barriers and immunities. Might be worth it, if you bother giving her induction stuff, but probably not.
Byakuren's barriers are VERY nice, but only the induction scroll is really worth it imo.
Satori has some induction eyes which are great, and a poison boosting eye. Probably worth it.
Marisa brooms give endless mana and bombs. Worth it.
Patche's books are mandatory for physical Patche. Not worth it otherwise.
Alice's boots give excellent resistances to statuses, and the rainbow greaves are fucking amazing. Very worth it.

None of this takes into account unique weapon skill trees, which have some nice stuff in them.

Some weapons only really start to shine in that endurance dungeon near the end. Satori's final weapon can inflict control which is pretty good in there and Hijiri having 50 Divine Barrier + some magic reflect helps to keep her alive against all the stronger enemies in there without wasting all your defensive items on her.

Some weapons really offer little though. Aya never deals any good damage so all her weapon is good for is a little extra evade. It took forever to find the one enemy who can drop it but he dropped it on the first try. It would really help if the game actually told you on which floor enemies spawn and not just the level.

My advice...
Don't fight everything, as hard as it is to dodge stuff in Lakebed's cramped confines. Also run liberally. I've found that no matter how I build my three parties, there'll always be monsters or groups of monsters that I can't effectively fight...so I don't.
Don't just run into the one-time use save points; see if you can make some more progress before using them.
The middle party will reach the end of their path first, and thus has early access to a real save point. The left party will reach the end last, I'd guess.

The one thing you should be aware of is that that it's not always important to have every character's most recent weapon. Generic weapons can often be better than character specific weapons. Don't waste your materials on weapons that sound useless. If Sanae doesn't attack, don't waste items to make her a weapon with strong physical attack.

Yeah, I use Mokou and Sakuya for her, and she was always the guaranteed one-try fight of the three, but all of a sudden she started doing 1000 Needles on the first and second turn almost every time, and Mokou's refusal to crit also didn't help.

I got wiped at first, so I just went and bought some non-shit weapons and she melted. Moku did 11,000+ dmg one turn and Sakuya got her last word and two 3-turn private squares. Overkill.

Now to get destroyed by the other two. At least I keep the experience if I lose.

She didn't do much. I just put her there because she was the only one left apart from Sakuya who could reliably tank her attacks. Slash of Eternity did some 1k+ combos with the crit enhance buff though, and I just didn't even care about the element shield.
