48 family has always been about this whole "idol you can meet", girls that you can easily relate to. Also, while there are people out there that would complain how some members/idols can't sing or dance, or ugly, to be honest, it's not just for AKB, but the whole idol concept in Japan does not revolves around their talent in those things. For the girls themselves, being an idol is more of a gateway for them to the entertainment world.

High-quality girls that have massive talent or quality would usually just go straight to being a singers,actors or models from the get go. Usually they won't go for the idol route. But for girls who falls short in some aspect to simply go for their dream, the idol world is where they would hone their skills. They kinda earn their place in entertainment world with something akin to grinding a lot in low-level area with low-level monsters, or something like that. Kinda like hi-level Rattata, it is reliable to some extent even at end point of the game, but you know that Mewtwo of the same level would always kicks its ass. So that's why it's pretty hard to see those Mewtwo level girls among the auditionees.

Not to mention, being an idol usually revolves more around gaining support and push by your fans, the idol-fans bond is more or less the highlight of this whole idol business rather than simply their talent or their works. So there are also girls that just want to be an idol to experience those feels of being well, idolized, supported and don't forget, being called 'cute' almost all fucking time. No shit. Having people gushing over how kawaii you are apparently is some sort of drug to girls in Japan. Once you get a taste of it, you'll never go back.

For AKB in particular, they need a wide-arrange of girls with variety set of skills that can appeal to the audience in various kind of way. Sure, sometimes you do get a fluke with beautiful crazy talented girl trying to be an idol, but usually, you don't.

Well, not many beautiful girls goes to the audition then. It's not just NMB though, it's usually how the idol audition everywhere tends to look like. It's just up to the management to work their magic(make-up/make-over) on the girls, and how compatible the girls are with it.

Being a popular group doesn't change anything much, really. In fact, it's the more reason that you could see average girls dominating your vision there. And for the girls that have always been serious about being an idol, usually they won't really care which group they would get into. They'd audition everywhere.

Thanks for the heads up guys. There are some other smart members among the 48 girls, so I too think, and hope that there will be more members taking up the challenge. It's good for pretty much everyone involved after all.

Though unpopular members probably have a lot more time in hand to even attend the university while being in AKB(like Nacchi), while it'll probably be too taxing for very popular members like Mayuyu. We probably end up seeing rising members in the program if anything. Would be great if Mayuyu can enter the program and make it though.
