shinji is the ideal non-leading submissive male as envisioned by the illumaniti, notice how he is dominated both physically and psychologically by Asuka(note the red hair and overral red color scheme, symbolic of her thirst for[male] blood) and lives in dependance of single woman Misato(approvement of feminist ideals of divorce and living alone, "cougar" stereotype, one night stands to satisfy desires[too good for men/commitment]. male figures are overwhermingly poorly represented in the show, with Gendo being almost a villannous figure along with SEELE(notice the german=reference to nazi regime/patriarchy),all males too, and Shinji as the aforementioned weakling, , while womans like Ritsuko, Misato, Rei and Asuka are show as competent and strong despite of difficulties.
Worth of notice too are the angels, asexual figures who defeated men, strange bodies and mentalities(transexual people) but ultimately considered of a higher plane than man.
