The purpose of Zen is not to answer nonsensical questions. Koans are merely tools in which ti understand that logic is subjective and has no place in the psychology of everyday life.

The ultimate goal of Zen is to overcome the go in order to achieve awareness of the self. Once this is achieved, it is possible to live, and enjoy, life without worrying about subjective ideas (like religion).

The ultimate goal of Zen is to overcome the ego in order to achieve awareness of the self. Once this is achieved, it is possible to live, and enjoy, life without worrying about subjective ideas (like religion).

In fact, Zen denies the practice of religion because it is imperative to focus on life right now, on earth. Those who practice religion are too aught up in the otherworldly to live life right here, right now, at this very moment.

Well, Zen is very personal, so it means different things to different people. However, I do believe that Zen allows one to realize the self and live life for the moment instead of in the confines of reason and logic, which can sometimes be subjective and ever changing.

Nansen saw the monks of the eastern and western halls fighting over a cat. He seized the cat and told the monks: `If any of you say a good word, you can save the cat.'

No one answered. So Nansen boldly cut the cat in two pieces.

That evening Joshu returned and Nansen told him about this. Joshu removed his sandals and, placing them on his head, walked out.

Nansen said: `If you had been there, you could have saved the cat.'

It's not really a matter of opinion. Logic is a set of rules that is inherently objective. Axioms that you apply logic to to infer things can and are subjective, but logic itself is not.

You are right by saying that >Axioms that you apply logic to to infer things can and are subjective.

However, Logic can also be subjective. Logic is defined as principles governing correct or reliable inference. Can we not agree that "corrective inference" is subjective in itself? And since it is the principle quality of logic, then can we not say that logic is, therefore, SOMETIMES subjective?

The objective of zazen and zen thought games is to achieve a mental malfunction much like "religious experiences" all over the world. Something the practitioner feels is significant. At that point the teacher (religious authority) comes along and explains it in a way that validates his particular philosophy.

Tokusan was studying Zen under Ryutan. One night he came to Ryutan and asked many questions. The teacher said: `The night is getting old. Why don't you retire?'

So Tukusan bowed and opened the screen to go out, observing: `It is very dark outside.'

Ryutan offered Tokusan a lighted candle to find his way. Just as Tokusan received it, Ryutan blew it out. At that moment the mind of Tokusan was opened.

`What have you attained?' asked Ryutan.

`From now on,' said Tokusan, `I will not doubt the teacher's words.'

The next day Ryutan told the monks at his lecture: `I see one monk among you. His teeth are like the sword tree, his mouth is like the blood bowl. If you hit him hard with a big stick, he will not even so much as look back at you. Someday he will mount the highest peak and carry my teaching there.'

On that day, in front of the lecture hall, Tokusan burned to ashes his commentaries on the sutras. He said: `However abstruse the teachings are, in comparison with this enlightenment they are like a single hair to the great sky. However profound the complicated knowledge of the world, compared to this enlightenment it is like one drop of water to the great ocean.' Then he left the monastry.

What did your face look like before your parents were born?
I didn't exist, so it couldn't look like anything. But one can pose the question in natural language. Therefor, natural language allows for questions without answers. It is thus possible that some questions to which I don't know the answer may not have answers. It would be a profound waste of my resources to try to solve such a question, even if that question seems of pivotal importance.

Sitting still and pondering the navel will accomplish nothing except a better understanding of your navel. Buddha never intended anyone to spend their lives sitting and living as asthetics, something he figured out on his own was useless. As best I could tell, all he wanted everyone to understand was that suffering in inevitable with life, as the root of suffering is desire, something we experience immediately after birth until we die. He proved this by freeing his mind of desire, and such acheived life free of suffering.

But never, never assume the goal of your life is to live free of suffering and desire. Just understand the world around you, thats what he wanted. So just question everything, never belive anything unless is agrees with your own judgement and common sense, and do your best.

Thats it. everything else, every other school of buddhism is just pileing religeous bullshit ontop of one wise mans life work and teaching.

Before he became a hermit, Zarathud was a young Priest, and took great delight in making fools of his opponents in front of his followers.

One day Zarathud took his students to a pleasant pasture and there he confronted The Sacred Chao while She was contentedly grazing.

"Tell me, you dumb beast," demanded the Priest in his commanding voice, "why don't you do something worthwhile? What is your Purpose in Life, anyway?"

Munching the tasty grass, The Sacred Chao replied "MU". (The Chinese ideogram for NO-THING.)

Upon hearing this, absolutely nobody was enlightened.

Primarily because nobody understood Chinese.

Verily, I advise you: depart from me, and guard yourselves against Zarathustra! And better still: be ashamed of him! Perhaps he hath deceived you. The man of knowledge must be able not only to love his enemies, but also to hate his friends. One requiteth a teacher badly if one remain merely a student. And why will ye not pluck at my wreath? Ye venerate me; but what if your veneration should some day collapse? Take heed lest a statue crush you! Ye say, ye believe in Zarathustra? But of what account is Zarathustra! Ye are my believers: but of what account are all believers! Ye had not yet sought yourselves: then did ye find me. So do all believers; therefore all belief is of so little account. Now do I bid you lose me and find yourselves; and only when ye have all denied me, will I return unto you.
