How do you even discuss music with people?

I thought liking the same music as someone was just one of those artificial icebreakers. "You like The Beatles? Me too! We must be slightly compatible even though everyone from babies to serial killers likes The Beatles."

If you like painting, you discuss use of color, brush techniques, etc.

If you like music, you discuss different kinds of melody, structures, lyrical meanings, etc.

I mean if you like shitty music like Blink 182, that doesn't give you much to discuss.

I don't know. I think it's just the weird, cynical environment I was raised in, but it seems strange to try and analyze a song together unless you're some sort of critic. And it just seems odd to talk about specific lyrics or whatever, rather than analyze the song as a whole. Like when people with short attention spans comment on YouTube videos because they aren't entertained within 30 seconds.

This one probably is just me, but I'd cringe if someone started saying things about a band or song I like. If I was talking with them, I'd try to steer the conversation elsewhere. Media is for personal consumption, not social discussion.
