It's just nice to collect things, especially things you like. It's no different than owning a manga versus downloading it. There's something really relaxing about being able to go to bed knowing they're close.

Maybe even if you're having a hard day you take one out of your display case and leave it on the desk to comfort you. It's something you'll only understand if you buy one. This is about as sentimental as I get, I guess I see why you might not understand it.

I got bored of collecting figurines after about a year. Then I started buying dakimakuras and hug pillows instead. They have far more practical use on top of being cute.

I used to think like the OP, but after acquiring a few as impulse purchases at anime conventions, I think they're pretty nice. I'm not going to drop $120+ on one of the high end ones, but I can see the appeal of having a small fig collection on the shelf to look at.

You guys have made some very valid points, and indeed they are like art or decorations. I would like to have a few figures for my desk, too, and they would indeed cheer me up when I'm feeling down. I wish they made Joshiraku figures.

Figures make me happy, I like looking at them, several of them are breathtaking. A couple of them have removable/replaceable parts making them poseable too.
