He also celebrates his birthday in one of the original episodes, or the fact that it's been a year since he got Pikachu (his last birthday), or something.

Fact is, they missed out on a really good opportunity to have Ash grow older and for things to get a little more serious. I'm not asking for grim and gritty Pokemon, but it'd be nice to have a teenaged Ash dealing with some more grown-up challenges. I haven't played the newer games, but I hear they did this to an extent.

In my opinion the whole thing is retarded, there is a much, much better solution, and allows Nintendo to keep kids in the anime. What they should have done is change the protagonist every region, but still have the older characters come back every now again. And they should have killed Team Rocket after the Orange League. There's virtually no reason for them to exist anymore, and BW proved changing them into more serious and capable characters didn't make the story and worse, it made better, so I have no idea why they made them shit again.

Is the manga worth reading? I hear it's the most true to Satoshi Tajiri's original vision of Pokemon. Something about the later games rubs me the wrong way, like they're too sci-fi and not humble enough.

Where can I get it? Is it acceptable to buy the Viz releases, or did they butcher them? I remember reading it had some darker moments, like Pokemon being killed.

That's a good idea. I mean, the companions change. It would also be nice if Ash actually beat the Elite Four (has he?) and then had a few appearances later as an older, more respectable Pokemon Master.

I recall hearing something about them being shelved and everyone was upset. Then later I watched the Black & White episodes and there they were, with different voices and uniforms. I guess that's what I get for skipping ahead.

Viz didn't butcher them, it cut their face and skin off and made into a dress, then tucked between its legs and danced to Pokemon theme tune, with its furry OC characters super imposed next to them. Well, it wasn't that bad, but they basically made it to please the Soccer Mom's. To be honest I would just read the originals online, but I collected the Viz translations for the sake of collecting them, starting from when I was 13, so I didn't really know any better. The Ruby and Sapphire chapters haven't been released by Viz yet, but they are going to be.

Team Rocket were shelved for Butch and Cassidy, no-one complained then. But like I say, they don't even have to get rid of them completely, they can still appear every now and again.
