What the HECK is AKB?

Please explain, I've ignored these threads for over two years now.

The 48 franchise is a collection of idol groups (if you don't know what that means, please google it) that started with AKB48, based in Akihabara, Tokyo. The group started with a simple concept of "idols you can meet", as opposed to unreachable, far-away idols that used to be the standard of the industry. Besides this concept, which turned out to be a big part of their success, the group is characterized by a large amount of members (they hold the Guiness world record for largest pop group). They also hold an election every year, where fans can vote for members to enter a single - with so many members, only a small portion are in the single A-sides after all.

The members perform on singles, theater shows based in Akihabara, concerts, TV shows and much more. Over a span of a few years AKB changed from an underground idol group into a record-breaking cultural icon, and now the 48 franchise has many other groups as well, such as SKE48 (Nagoya), NMB48 (Osaka), HKT48 (Fukuoka), JKT48 (Jakarta, Indonesia) and SNH48 (Shanghai, China). Each of these groups has their own characteristics. Fans often have specific members they focus their support on, called oshi.

A japanese girl group consisting of around 61 members and 20 trainees (Kenkyuuseis). They have sister groups SKE48, NMB48, HKT48 as well as overseas groups JKT48 and SNH48.

For their singles they pick around 16 girls (usually the most popular) to promote the single and be on the music video and large scale events. However, every song by AKB is performed everyday at their theater in Akihabara, Tokyo.

Everyday in the theater, either team A, K, or B performs different songs and they just fool around and be fun. It's the same concept of teams for every sister group (e.g team S, team KII, team E for SKE).

Every year, there are general elections to determine who are the most popular girls among ALL the japanese *48 groups. The 16-21 most popular will be on the following single and generally get more attention.

Also they always do a bunch of handshake events since there are so many girls, which is what makes them so popular.

Also, in AKB48's singles, while there is a majority of AKB girls, they've been including the 2 most popular from each SKE, NMB and HKT.

The picture is the result of last year's election. The winner was Oshima Yuko, the 2nd girl is Watanabe Mayu and the 3rd one is Kashiwagi Yuki.

Each single has its own senbatsu (= selection). For AKB's singles it's a mix of girls from different teams + a few top members from sister groups (SKE, NMB, HKT). For sister groups, it's only their members. There's also different members for B-sides. All the selections are separate for each single.

In Shukan AKB, what does Aika say in the water battle to Mayu? They say it's so cruel they left it for the DVD.

Finally got around to listening to it last night. That is an amazing song, catchy as anything but it's a bit more sophisticated than the AKB stuff. Not to say better, just harkening back to that middle of the road stuff like Nana Mizuki/Maaya Sakamoto/Yukari Tamura is refreshing from time to time.

I am usually not blown away by the solo stuff from idols, but this is a really great song. B-sides are solid, too.

Aren't these groups crazy sexist and the women aren't allowed to have sex and shit? Do they have to sleep with their bosses? Or is that all just hyperbole and conjecture?

As for sexism, it's Japan. From a western viewpoint, practically anything in Japanese society is sexist, so in that way yeah. However, AKB also has put many young women at the top of the entertainment industry, and they're portrayed as hard-working, devoted to their career, ambitious, competitive and so on. In my opinion at least, this makes them more progressive role models than the traditional Japanese ideal of a quiet housewife who abandons her career forever upon marriage, which still IS prevalent in Japanese society...

For the sleeping around, I've never heard of anything like that.

I remember the time when I confessed that I was falling love with JKT48 in Jakarta to my wife. It was probably in Nov. 2011, almost established. For her eyes and mind, Ubud in Bali represents all Indonesia. We all visited that small village several time. I had to explain the detail defference between AKB and JKT to my wife. Such as JKT48 was energetic, ernest and pure than AKB, etc …My wife could not understand what I said to her. Even though about AKB, she hates it so much. She felt disgusted many AKB songs sung by her clients and colleagues at Karaoke room. She thought “they were so childish”. But finally she agrred my love with JKT. She said “Jakarta is OK, but if Akihabara not OK. Coz. it is capital city of Indonesia that we love”.
She also said “Recently you have so many topics about Indonesia on our table”. Yes, exactly she is right. After I started to love JKT48, I was changed to gather information reffering to Indonesia from newspaper(my house subsclibing an economical newspaper “Nikkei”), magazines and sure TV as many as possible.
I am running my own marketing and trading office. I've come to think about this new system, and the conclusion I've reached is that this year's whole election is based on the premise of "tsubusu tsumori de kite kudasai" (from Mariko-sama's speech last year). Senpai don't automatically create way for kouhais to rank-up, and kouhai have to make the decision to take the challenge.

Even the election front page has a quote from Mariko's speech from last year (specifically "tsubusu tsumori de kite kudasai. watashi wa mattemasu.").
