Mangagamer thread

They released My Sex Slave is a Classmate last week, random person's analysis from the otakuism forums.

>Now to the main course: the translation.
In my opinion it was pretty good. It was MUCH better than the descriptions of the games on mangagamer site, which really had me worried.
In the game there were just a couple of typos - and i mean just a couple, not more than in an average book, and i was looking for mistakes.
So i assume there were people busy proofreading and editing for the last couple of weeks.
Two problems were sadly evident: lack of honorifics - i can live without them since they were spoken, but i would have really prefered to read them as well. The more important one: some time sthe tex twas strangely spaced. I think someone did not test enough how the text will be shown after copying from an editor. I was able to adapt pretty quickly and the spacing problem would disappear for minutes only to reappear again in couple of sentences. But it could also be a problem unique to my computer, although i doubt it.

They also released the 1.01 version of Which Girl Should I Choose, which while in no way perfect, is apparently a significant improvement over their original.

Both of these are good news for the Circus titles that they will be releasing, as we may actually get decent translations afterall.

Suck My Dick or Die's official description

>The anti-government guerrillas were fighting agaist the government in the country which was politically unrest. There was an incident that a little girl was raped and murdered by the guerrillas in a small village. Mr. Prosper, who is the commander of the military, advanced his men to this small village to hunt the guerrillas. But the incident was all planned out by him, so that he could have a raping party for himself. The girls, who were suspicious as guerrillas, were arrested. That was the beginning of the insane raping party.

Honorifics are fine in some games, as long as their use is consistent. In games where changes in how one addresses another, it doesn't always make sense if they use English equivalent because in general conversation between two English speakers would not see a change and the point isn't properly explained in English (excluding a case where Mr., Ms., etc is used.)

As for the picture, this is the only case I recall in this game that they mentioned "kun" which seems very out of place in the translation.

>> No.1042687

August 10th still listed as 4 games, although I doubt they will do a quad release.

If you're not able to express a shift in familiarity without using honorifics, you don't deserve to be paid for translating.

>> No.1042702

>>1042691
Honorifics should remain in games that are voiced and have importance to the plot, since while you read you hear the honorifics and they do a better job than the English equivalent (and most people playing will think, "oh, that is how they translated it") and the vast majority of people who play such games will understand the honorifics (and translation notes can be added for those who don't)

"Which Girl Should I Choose" is the only title I really hate. Hinatabokko translates into "Sunlight Bath", why couldn't they just go with that?

You can always provide translation notes in a separate .txt

The point of translating isn't to arbitrarily leave certain words untranslated just because it's difficult to convey the meaning in english.
What Pros do when they come across sections that are untranslatable is they write some filler text and then provide a footnote, or they release a separate reference file where they compile all their translation notes.

This is how it's done when translating every other language, Japanese is not unique in that it uses honorifics or other language conventions that are not found in English.

>> No.1043153

They actually hired someone who knows English and shit? Awesome.

If it weren't for the copy-protection shit, I'd actually be willing to buy their stuff. At least this saves me some money, since it looks like they have a number of titles I would've bought in the works. But I still wish they'd go with actual physical discs...

>> No.1043193

>>1043131
there are however problems with that in a visual novel

1.) It is a bother to need to go and search for translation notes because of a hard to translate section, while keeping honorifics that most people playing already knows makes this not an issue, and a readme.txt that is read before playing can tell the people who are unused to them are.

2.) if you have a footnotes section that explains specific points in the plot, you will have some spoilers in there that people may end up reading beforehand since they would be listed since you are taking the approach to deal with stuff when they come up and putting them in a list, rather than explaining ahead of time the general rules which would have no spoilers.

>> No.1043218

>>1043131
They are creating a project for people who have a larger knowledge of Japanese than the average person, and they are creating a product to sell to these people, which changes the general approach. Although it is true that one would normally fully translate everything, if you are selling a game that the audience would understand the game better if honorifics are kept in, then that is what you should do, even if it isn't the traditional method of translating, particular in the case of a voiced game where the Japanese is still heard.

They really need to do well with the Circus titles, as they will be the main seller

Circus, more so than the other companies involved, seems very interested in getting their games internationally and wants to make sure a good product gets out there (their biggest motivation is probably to whore out Da Capo more, but thats fine, it helps us.) Circus expressed their concern with early complaints, and they are continuing to listen to complaints and can put pressure on Mangagamer to do a good job because the Da Capo line is Mangagamer's best bet for a successful future.
