She can't actually sing. Her range is extremely tight which will become obvious if she continues to release more songs since the composers will be restricted in the keys they can write in. The idol groups can get away with singing outside of their range because there are so many of them that everything kind of "averages out" to the right notes if you want to think about it that way.

That being said, she has a good variety personality so even without singing she should be more or less fine with a solo career.

I'm not surprised you haven't heard of it, since the "scoop" went largely unnoticed and was quickly forgotten by everyone, even in Japan.
See, the fact that a member as noticeable as Tomochin got away with it and fans just shrugged it all off shows that the issue is being purposefully blown out of proportion for the sake of forcing an argument.
