I'm probably going to get shit for this and you're probably trolling, but I actually agree 100%, at least from the VNs that I have personally read. Rewrite is utterly gorgeous and every element blends beautifully together. There were a few scenes where I thought it could benefit well from a CG that wasn't present or absurd moments when characters were voice acted but didn't have a sprite but that doesn't detract from the art that actually is present and it is gorgeous.

If you're asking 'one best', that's tough choice.
If you're asking my favorite for 2012, the ones that immediately comes into my mind are: Da Capo 3, Kimisora, Hatsusaku, and Supipara. Milky Holmes 2 if that counts. There might a few more, but that's all I can remember atm.

I played Sengoku Rance for the game content. I really like warring states games. Sengoku Rance is much different than most of them: it has a plot, it has characterization, and it has interactions. It also works pretty well as a game: the rules are simple, but the way they interact provides some tactical depth. Also, the "new game plus" was implemented more cleverly here than in most other games.

If it wasn't for the constant rape and the asshole protagonist, this would be my favorite game of this kind.

While it seems Happoubijin is credited for most of the work, some other people, Natsuka Ruri and MARSHAN, are credited for helping with graphics in the 2nd game. It might be stuff like menu graphics though. I'd say most of what you see is indeed Happou's work.

Muramasa and the newer version of Kikokugai had amazing art. Still need to play Hanachirasu.

Other than that, theres a few where the characters are nothing special but the rest of the art is really nice, like Minori and asairo.

Also, I actually like August's character design. Sure, it has sameface, but it's a pretty damn cute face.

If you take it as a slice of life story set in a rural village it's really good.
Aside from looking gorgeous, it sounds just as nice and has really fun / cute characters. Lose (the producer) also have some sort of endless supply of add-on h scenes for download, making this the game with probably the most ero from last year, aside from straight out nukige. And an actual fandisc is in the make aswell.
Just don't expect too much from the story and you're well off.

I'm not quite sure since I'm obviously a scumbag who hasn't spend a single cent, but there was one "scene add on pack" which might've cost money, or maybe it just came with a specific version of the game. Then there's one scenario you can only get if you buy from dlsite, I think that one hasn't found its way too the free internet yet. And then there's about 3 or 4 scenarios / scenario packs you can download from the official site for free.
