I'll warn you that, it least from my impression, there isn't much that can prepare you for Muramasa-level vocab besides just playing Muramasa itself. Personally I finished an entire route, took a few weeks off to let my anki decks die down, and then restarted and finally I could read it like a normal VN. I wouldn't recommend going quite that far, but it might be worth going to the end of chapter 1 or 2, just to grab as much vocab as you can for anki, so that after your break you'll actually be able to read it.

I guess it doesn't help that there are so many fighting infodumps in the first few chapters.

Exactly, those are the types of h-scenes I like to see. It felt like they actually fit well with and gave you more insight into the characters, as opposed to being cheesy fap fuel and, in the worst cases, completely out-of-character. Though I'm not saying that I expect your average moege to handle them like that or anything.

Is that really true? I see a lot of people discussing PSX, PS2, and other console VNs, and I'm pretty sure you can't hook those. Though I have seen some people straight up post a screen shot of a game with TA open which lowers my confidence. The question is, what's the degree of fluency. I can read and understand simple words and construct simple sentences, but some VN writers abuse a lot of kanji and vocabulary when they could write it in simpler terms. Text hookers helps a lot.

When I think of TA I just think of a program that lets you use multiple machine translators at once, I don't know if there's any other features than that so I might be misinformed. I mean, any method that allows you to learn the language can't be "negative". As long as you are indeed learning it. The only bad thing in my opinion is the people on hongfire and vndb that make no effort to even look at the Japanese text and just mindlessly read what the translator spits out. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them don't even know kana. I would really like to think that there aren't people here who read VNs like that and then post and participate in discussions about them with everyone else.

Most people out there, not necessarily in this thread mind you, use TA as a means to machine translate their way through Japanese games. I remember seeing it all the time for Baldr Sky, Muv Luv, various nukige, etc. so when people hear of someone relying on TA to read through a game, it can sometimes give a bad impression.

Of course there is nothing wrong with using TA to supplement your lack of kanji knowledge or something while learning.

Well its a bit customizeable in the translation tools it will display, but what makes it useful as a learning tool is that it will display the original japanese text but highlighted or spaced out a bit to seperate the particles/vocab, as well as displaying furigana for any kanji

Also WWWJDIC included for any new words you come across, really for anyone who is actually using it properly the auto translation tools will hardly come into effect unless you just want to check what you think the sentence means against the "translated" one to compare (which doesn't work 95% of the time anyway).

You need to act like a pirate, just go on the open fields and ambush passing caravans. They net you 100k per transport if you're lucky.

Also go to the towns and pillage, the first time you pillage a town you'll capture a girl. You can sell their virginities for 50k-60k each. The girl you capture from Area7 is especially valuable, you can sell her to the police afterwards for 150k.

Well if there are dudes in that don't like you, (level 5) when you go to visit your wife there can be an event where they'll see you go in your house and see your hot wife. Then they rape her. There is also the one where the leader of your faction can rape her too. Not sure what all the conditions are though.

Also this is with the Powered Up Kit. Not sure if it's in the vanilla game, if that's what you're playing.

It would be skewed because their choices are limited to what is translated, not necessarily because of what types of game they like. I'd guess that most people who use decimal scores go by the thinking: It would have been an 8 if that route/character wasn't so terrible...
Thus -.5 or whatever. I don't really see a point in being that specific unless you are using a check list or something.

For me it's for differentiating games that would otherwise be the same number. So even if both are a 7 I might thing "hmm I liked A a little more than B, but not enough to put it up there with my other 8 stuff". So I'd rate A 7.1(or .2, .3, etc. depending on how much more I enjoyed it) to put it a little higher than B. If you only rate a small amount of VNs it's not really necessary.

When you do in depth reviews on different categories maybe. A .x rating implies that you are using some sort of detailed system. .5 is far more than enough to say it's above a '7' but less than '8'.

I've rated plenty. It's more that unless you are going to sit down and analyze every reason of why you feel that it is .1 better and in what ways I think you are playing a numbers game that I'm avoiding. Especially when I take into account that I am not likely to remember every single detail, complaint, or impression that I had after finishing years later. Half a point can make sense for sure because you run into things that you consider barely an 8 or a strong 8.
There are people who have category point systems and aggressively take notes for their ratings where it does make sense.

>unless you are going to sit down and analyze every reason of why you feel that it is .1 better
In my case, it's not so much that it's exactly .1 or .2 points better. Like I said it's just to rank them more accurately. It's all relative to your other ratings.
If I only had two VNs rated as a 7 then yeah I'd give it a 7.5 instead of a 7.1. But since I have like ten or more games at a each number, then I have to think "Well, I do like this game more than this one which I rated a 7. Let's put it at 7.1. Wait, but I liked it more than this 7.1 one. Let's put it at 7.5. Actually I didn't enjoy it on the same level as this one. Let's put it at 7.4." etc. etc., until I find a fitting place. It's not like I have some intricate system to decide between .1 or .2, personally.
Also I rate games right after I finish them so they're fresh in my mind. I mean, I pretty much do this rating thing for fun. It's not like I'm sharing it with other people.

Sometimes I think my rating system is a little inaccurate. I'd give a title which would otherwise deserve to be a full 10/10 something in the 70s/80s due to it having some off model CGs or repetitive BGMs. Or give a title I'd technically call one of my absolute favourites something in the 80s.

>Or give a title I'd technically call one of my absolute favourites something in the 80s.
Me too, I don't even have a single 100 title. Even though I have "favorites" I still haven't felt like I've came across a VN that I'd rate that score, I think I'm a bit too harsh. Maybe because I rate on the scale that 5/50 is average where a lot of people seem to rate on the scale of 7/70 is average.

>> No.10393490

Nah, that's pretty much what happens if there is no system. People just roll with whatever they want. You probably have attached value to each part individually rather than just going off how much you enjoyed it as a whole.
The number is mostly for yourself anyway. If you are sharing it as long as you are consistent it doesn't really matter. If it bugs you a lot I guess you should jot down one word strengths and weaknesses.

Finished Bunny Black2. The gameplay changes seemed designed to make it more of a chore and I don't think the premise was solid enough to warrant a sequel.

Gameplay: Micromanaging level ups for all units. Adding 200 points of energy manually for everyone didn't seem like good use of time. Removal of teleportation magic and the skill that marked points of interest on the mini map as well as adding random encounters made exploring vast dungeons more frustrating than it had to be. They did remove the inventory cap though.

Overall I did enjoy it a lot less than the first one.
