I just finished the last episode of MG2.

... it was like reliving Acchan's graduation, though it aired before Acchan graduated. And I hate that. Both Acchan and the Maeda character were boring as fuck, yet managed to maintain the top spot without breaking a sweat, leaving in the end in a condescending way. Just like when Acchan graduated. The only difference is that, in the show, she left her top spot to Center and IRL she left it to Yuuko.

Other than that and it overall being way shittier than S1, I kinda did enjoy it.

Unfortunately, yes. One of the biggest failings of the third season IMHO is how the best actors and most interesting characters all belong to the bad guy's side, which the directors inevitably want viewers to root against, in addition to having significantly less screentime.
In retrospect, I wouldn't really have minded watching a MG3 with Annin and Ranran as the main characters, but pushing Paruru was clearly a top priority.
As she didn't already have her chance to shine as the protagonist of Bakaleya (and even then, Kaoru was clearly the best).

This talk of AKB being different... I'm wondering if anybody else here has been around long enough to remember theater 2 shots or the other shit they did to encourage otaku loyalty like 一日支配人.

One of the big prizes for the theater gacha machines was a 2 shot ticket. This would get you a few minutes one-on-one with a girl after the show to talk and take polaroids, then she'd decorate it for you, just like a maid cafe. Talking to guys who did this regularly, the girls would actually remember the content of the conversations and knew their fans by name, which seems kind of amazing looking back on it now. You could buy them on yahoo and they weren't terribly expensive at first, it wasn't that outlandish to go occassionally.

That was probably the most pandering thing they did but for their first 3 years AKB was kept afloat by acting as surrogate girlfriends, moreso than any other idol group who has gotten remotely popular. It isn't unusual that the otaku get pissed off about dating.

No, that's ridiculous. All you need to do is find a good picture, preferably photobook/magazine quality, of a generally liked/popular member without giving bias to any one member.
