But "Manatsu" and "Heavy Rotation" are like, the perfect pop songs. Their ballads on the other hand...bar the midtempo "Kaze wa Fuiteiru," just require a much different ear to appreciate them.

K-pop fans do indeed have a much different expectation for their pop ditties, though, I agree there. Myself, I go both ways.

I listen to Kpop too and I understand how it appeals to more people because it's basically pop with a foreign lyrics. I can't name an AKB song that sounds (western) pop actually. Which is a good thing.

The only way for a rival group to rival AKB48 is to release a shocking song/video e.g. Kataomoi Finally. That shit practically boosted SKE48's sales and got me interested in them.

If anyone's coming close, it's Momoiro Clover Z...they still need time to blow up though. They're certainly on their way...

Comparing Gaga to Britney is kind of ridiculous if you actually observe either on a stage, I suppose is the only point I was making. There's no doubt that Britney has some of the best pop songs of all time but her voice is as good as a keyboard preset and her performance skill has become that of a zombie, whereas Gaga has been writing her own songs and delivering in performances since day 1 despite her over-the-top campiness.
