10317666 No.10317666[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

After seeing all sorts of praise about Katawa Shoujo all over 4chan for a whole year and having just recently read a thread on /r9k/ about it, I decided to give it a try, having absolutely zero experience not only with visual novels, but with anything /jp/ related (or, at least, what I assume /jp/ deals in).

Holy shit, you guys, if it wasn't the most boring thing I have ever laid eyes upon. The plot seemed to move at the speed of a fat guy swimming through molasses, most conversations felt so utterly petty and trivial that I was close to falling asleep, the dialogue felt stilted and unnaturally written, and the choices I could make were sparse and felt inconsequential.

Now, I wouldn't make this thread just to bitch and have you call me a troll. So, I come to you, /jp/, asking for advice. Can you point me to the direction of a visual novel that is shorter/more energetic and feels more like a "game" (and, for an added bonus, isn't about trying to get into someone's pants), or is it a lost cause for me because of the nature of the medium?

>> No.10317703

>>10317666
Visual Novels are very much an acquired taste. However, an issue people have when approaching visual novels, especially newcomers, is they view it as some kind of 'game'. This is not true. Approach it more like you'd approach a book, just one with visual and audio elements. If you want to play a game, play a game. If you want to read a book, read a book or try out a VN. I'm not saying reading a VN is like reading a book, I'm just saying they're more similar than playing a game and you should approach it similarly to how you'd approach a book.

So, in Planetarium, the girl doesn't die immediately from the cannon shot. Her lower body is blasted off, which probably removed or damaged her main battery, but she's fine right up until the part where her backup battery runs out. The 'cause of death' was a lack of power, not the physical damage inflicted by the shell.

So, my question: what stop him from carrying her torso along with him (he did survive according to the LNs,) plugging her into something, and having her be alive again?

It's not far-fetched that he would find an old generator somewhere.

Katawa Shoujo FAQ

I just finished Katawa Shoujo and I would like to post, but I'm nervous. What do I do?
Just post! We're a highly welcoming community, we don't bite.

The people in KSG are using terms I don't understand! What do they mean?
There are a few terms used in here that may be confusing to the newcomers. Here's a brief list of KSG terminology, I'll add more as I see fit.
-Din dins: sex
-Swaggervest: Hisao's sweatervest
-Salty Tears, Love Despite, Spaghetti Studios, Mentaru Shoujo/Missing Stars: These are all VNs in production by KSG-goers.
-Shizoon: a nickname for Shizune, playing off a mispronunciation of her name.
-Suzu/Snoozu: A background character seen here, http://i48.tinypic.com/107qm3s.jpg, in the classroom CG. She's often confused with Shizune and has gathered a good amount of fans due to a few fanfictions and pseudoroutes in production. Check the writebin in the OP for her stories.
-Saki and Rika: two characters from an April Fool's joke by the developers. They also both have good fanfictions and pseudoroutes which are, as always, in the writebin.
-Burger o'clock: A tripfriend Aster posts a picture of Misha eating a hamburger every night at the same time. This is burger o'clock
Katawa dick: an unusual phenomenon where one loses the will or ability to masturbate after playing Katawa Shoujo.

Hey OP.

You seem like a decent guy who knows shit when he sees it, so here's my suggestions.

999 - This is a DS adventure game, essentially a visual novel. It is fantastic. It has a sequel but I haven't played it. The writer has an excellent track record and makes really satisfying endings. Don't get spoiled.

Dangan Ronpa - This one actually isn't done yet, however the translation is completely finished so it's almost guaranteed to complete. It's a murder mystery game and requires good reflexes. Excellent writing quality, art is gorgeous. Round table discussions which make up the bulk of gameplay are fully voiced.

Saya no Uta, Narcissu, Planetarian - These are more "normal" VNs, in that they have limited or no choices, and no gameplay. They're also short, well written, and can hold your attention. If you don't like these, I doubt you'll find much else to interest you. Also, pretty much everyone has played them, so you'll share some reference with /jpl.

This has a translation? Damn, I've been awfully out of the loop. When I played through it a couple of months ago there wasn't any activity on it.

I also wonder how well the translator is translating the curious verbal inflexions characteristic of most characters. I don't have high expectations though.

Snatcher, by Hideo Kojima.
It has a pretty awesome story that isn't (fully) about trying to fuck girls. And it has some shooting segments to break up the reading, though they're pretty simple.
