I'm already doing that mechanical turk shit to get my $20 a day, but that takes about 4 hours of working to get and all I'm doing is simple google searches and surveys. I'd imagine translations pay more than that, but I don't want to work too much either. $20 a day is more than enough for me.

Practice is the key, you need to learn like a child. You did not all get adult magazines when you were kids right? Start small and work you way up. I've been studying for three years. I took 2 years in high school, and thus did not have a third year of formal education, and am currently studying from Genki at home for 30 or so minutes every night. I even went to Japan for 14 school-sponsored days for a bit more studying.

I'm not really into as much anime as I used to be (I check /jp/ for Japanese threads), but I can't understand much in anime. I can carry simple/intermediate conversation and know a bunch of kanji, but that's it. I'm learning more from my uni Chinese, which is probably going to be more useful in the long run.

I would have to agree. I picked it up since I had to pick up a foreign language, and the first year was just to pass it.

Also, our teacher was an old Japanese lady (Sweetest person ever) who had no control over her classroom and occasionally rambled in Japanese to us accidentally. If the class clowns didn't have control of that class and I was a bit more pressed to learn early on, I would have done much better.

Also, can anyone share if there is any hope for self-taught person? Since learning it in a classroom is not an option, I want to know if self-learning from a textbook will actually get you anywhere.

Yeah, you could do a little memory game and learn all of them in an hour, have fun forgetting it all in a bit and not remembering anything unless you keep reading them constantly for a while, which I would consider apart of your time spent "learning" them.

I learn readings by learning words, and I think it works pretty well, as I seem to make the same mistakes native readers do.

However, some people want to pass the JLPT1 in less than ten years, and to do that you must have all the useless readings memorized as well as the useful ones.

What? Everything tested in JLPT1 is useful.
