The year is coming to an end, and while I'm sure C83 will bring many great things, I think we should have a thread for our favorite jp music of 2012 so far.

Download links and a possible sample would be nice, but it's okay if you don't give them.

A personal favorite:

It may not be what you had in mind, but this is probably my favorite release from Japan this year. Lostage are a post-hardcore(?) band and the new album they dropped this year didn't disappoint me. I recommend them if you enjoy Number Girl, Bloodthirsty Butchers, maybe Mass of the Fermenting Dregs or anything similar.

Lostage - Echoes

Don't let the first track put you off if you're not into that kind of thing.

The World Destination was probably my favorite C82 release, but I'm sure everyone has it. The production was top notch and Takanashi Toriko was great on In The Flickering. I don't think I've heard her featured in anything else.

boris released a cover of asobi seksu's "new years" and that's about all i needed to survive this year! asian kung-fu generation released a new album this year but i haven't listened to it.

zazen boys (mukai's group post-number girl) released their fifth album, stories, this year. like most zazen boys albums, first listens didn't generate much for me, but coming back to it a few months later i've found a lot to love in it. sorry i don't have a dl link but here's a song from it mukai posted as a preview of the album:
https://soundcloud.com/matsuristudio/zazen-boys-potato-salad

i also recommend my dead girlfriend's new album, underdrawing for three forms of unhappiness at the state of existence. bit of a pretentious title but the music is shoegazey and post-rocky.

mind highlighting what you think some of those brilliant moments are so i can try giving those another listen?

also, while it was at the veryvery beginning of 2012, i'll take whatever chance i can to promote skirt no naka's chikotan. they broke up i think a few months ago, but this (mini?) album is fantastic. frantic and fairly dirty girls' rock group--very reminiscent of midori, honestly--with an incredible closing song on this album. no direct download link (i got mine from a torrent) but i may just look into uploading this one myself to get it out there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh3B0V2GIwo

speaking of midori: mariko goto released a solo album! it's not as psychotic as her work with midori but it's pretty distinctively her. and that's just fine! it's a lot "poppier," both in composition and production. i just love how she uses her voice. incredible control, reminds me of keiji haino, actually. so cute in some places, screaming horribly just a moment later, ah~ anyways, same case as skirt no naka, may upload it for y'all.

I thought it was a pretty disappointing year for original doujin music. As far as originals go, 「モルモティカc」 from C/U and 「幸せの国」 from Akashic Records were probably my favorite albums. M3-29 and M3-30, as well as C82 were generally disappointing for original music. As for Touhou music, it was pretty good, but not better than 2010 or 2011. Some nice releases during 例大祭9 and C82 mostly, as well as a few from 紅楼夢8. 「プチカミロマンティカ」, 「Night Gypsy -東方JAZZROCK-」, 「花色コントラスト」, 「悠久幻想郷」, 「あの日の蜃気楼」, 「focus and defocus」, and 「BlazeOut」 would probably be some of my favorite Touhou related releases this year. Also, that large Toranoana collaboration album was great. I'm still looking forward to C83.

I think the best new discovery for me was CC*=Style (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNNsfKKEhek).). Best album would go to Syrufits - White Clear (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSoZJsyUALo)), with FELTs - Stand Up coming in a close second. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr444SC1EBU).). Pastyle x IZMIZM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd60uxME5bI)) was a nice mix up, and a surprise to me was IOSYS with Quality Underground (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvS-vVzjuV4).).

I'm still pretty heavy on electronic, but there are a few groups i like for light rock or alternative, 豚乙女 and サリー of course. 彩音 ~xi-on~ was pretty good too.
2012 has brought some of the best music i've heard from touhou and doujin artists, no question. Ten desires has become quickly one of the best OSTS for touhou, if not my favorite as a result of all the great arranges.

Doujin circles finally raving like it's 1992, Breakbeat Hardcore and Acid all up in this business. The shitty automated MC is a pain but try to ignore him, the album is quality.

>Drum & Bass
http://www.mediafire.com/?uq2r3p7ga9878mc

Crossfade: https://soundcloud.com/laz-g/plcd-0005-asphyxia-report

Probably the best doujin Drum & Bass producer now that Fang seems to have lost his edge, Izna has gone full Jazz and Ziki_7 doesn't make as many tunes. What I particularly liked is that this album had a track on it which is like a lot of current D&B being released on Critical Music/Exit Music/Metalheadz, that was impressive.

[MINAMOTRANCE] neu erstellen:
>Drum & Bass

Crossfade: https://soundcloud.com/minamotoya/neu-erstellen

Another good Drum & Bass album even though it suffers from that typical doujin producer D&B sound (which only really Laz and Izna seem to be able to break away from). Some tracks skirt on the border of Drumstep/Brostep but ignore those. There's one old school Breakbeat Hardcore in the mix as well, which is great.

Great taste. But personally, in 2012 as a whole, I liked the same arranger's "Capital of Flowers in the Sky" better, but hey it's marginally.

I actually though that C81 was an amazing event as a whole, and somehow I didn't enjoy Reitaisai 9 and C83 as much. Still a lot of great albums, but I believe I think this might be the best one as a whole, a full 10/10 folk album. A debut album to boot.

For an example 2,3,5 have good vocal(i know its the same singer but what i mean how she actually sing the song) and arrangement but....it seems i find the short version of the sample manage to bring out its full potential. I've listened to probably hundreds of dubstep tracks and it never stops being tuneless nonsense to me, I don't understand how you're supposed to dance to it.

>tuneless nonsense
That might just be the point.

Dubstep is all about exercising technical skill in controlling synthesizers, and creating interesting sound effects in the process. There is always a sense of dubstep being "lacking" if you try to evaluate like you do most other genres of music, because, to some extent, all dubstep tracks deliberately put the musical structure in the background to showcase the sound effects.

I'm the kind of person that can load up a Sega Genesis game in an emulator and play around with the sound effects for 10 minutes. I also can't help but enjoy breakcore. Dubstep appeals to me on similar levels. That doesn't mean that I don't enjoy more traditional genres of music, it just means I listen to dubstep with a different mindset.

You might prefer some doujin dubstep tracks, like some of the stuff Syrufit and ALiCE'S EMOTiON do, as I find they do a better job of integrating their wubs into a traditional structure than mainstream artists (I liked someone's description of Syrufit's Invulnerable, that it had a wider range of emotion than just "FULL ON" like most dubstep tracks).

As for how you dance to it, I guess you drink a lot and do this?

I can listen to breakcore fine, in fact I really enjoy some breakcore and I can appreciate the technical aspect of it to some extent having tried to make some electronic music myself.

It just frustrates me that it's genre of dance music where you are always trying to dance to the previous beat because you don't have a clue what's coming, obviously before the drop this isn't a problem but that bit is just there so you can get to the part which is actually dubstep. Surely they could just use the same noises in something which which keeps a regular beat but I suppose that's the point.

I have no doubt if I was at something like that I'd be doing exactly the same thing as everyone else and loving every second of it.

Maybe it's just because I choose to define dubstep as the music with all the wubs and none of the tune and I'm too out of touch to understand what all the hip youth are into nowadays.

Murder Channel is a record label that releases quite a wide variety of music, mainly Breakcore, Hardcore, Jungle/Raggacore and Dubstep (proper Dubstep, no brostep).
