About the game:

(shamelessly copied from the wiki)

Touhou Hisoutensoku is the third fighting game in the Touhou Project and like its predecessors, Immaterial and Missing Power and Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Touhou Hisoutensoku is a collaboration between ZUN and Twilight Frontier. Due to that collaboration, its art was drawn by Alphes and the music was composed by U2 Akiyama, both from Twilight Frontier.

It depends.

In a broad sense, you should try to escape by either high jumping out, chicken blocking, grazing forward, using some kind of reversal, or Border Escaping.

Knowing which option to pick depends on a bunch of things. Who are you fighting? What are his options? How is he playing?

If you're playing someone way better than you and he's just crushing you over and over, there's a good chance his pressure isn't as good as it seems, has an easy escape point, and he's just using it because you're letting him, since you don't know how to beat it.

Start off by trying to find a point where you think he's going to throw bullets, and high jump out, or graze out.

I'm not him, but that's not the point. The point is that there is literally no reason for someone who's been playing the game for 3 years (since it came out) to be playing someone new to the game. They aren't gonna learn shit, and it's just gonna discourage them from playing, resulting in a dying scene.

Inaccurate. New players can learn plenty from experienced players in matches through mimicry and reviewing their own replays afterwards to learn what they did wrong/should do differently. Any new player that comes in, gets drove, and then complains about fighting someone more experienced wasn't planning to learn the game to begin with or just wanted an easy win to justified their meager AI-trained skills (which the AI teaches nothing but spamming projectiles that only gets you roflstomped online to begin with, no matter the level).

BTW, not same dude, another one of those "from the beginning" players who can attest to losing more than winning before getting better. Just take them and keep moving.

>> No.10095754

>>10094941
You're still wrong. Yes you can learn from losing, but only to a certain extent. If I just started playing AE, and you put me against someone like Mago or Poongko, I'm not going to learn anything because I'm gonna get destroyed so hard as the skill level is far too wide and I'm not going to know what I did wrong.

>> No.10095784

>>10095754
If the skill differential is so large that your opponent baits all your reversals, predicts or shoves you into the corner whenever you try to high-jump or border escape, and changes up his blockstring so that you fail at rightblocking to the point where you can be corner crushed in two seconds, then yes, you aren't going to learn anything.

But most people aren't losing anywhere near that badly. You can learn from your losses as long as when something goes wrong in the game, you recognize what went wrong and recognize what you should have done instead.

>> No.10095855

>>10095784
>You can learn from your losses as long as when something goes wrong in the game, you recognize what went wrong and recognize what you should have done instead.

My point is that even if you do know what you did "wrong", even changing up what you did STILL won't work because as I said earlier, the gap is much too wide, and all it does is discourage people from playing your game. I'm not saying to throw games for the sake of their ego, but what I am saying is that there is no point in someone from the IRC for example connecting to someone who openly says he's a new player and bad at the game; he isn't going to learn anything and he'll probably drop the game since he feels he isn't getting anywhere with it no matter how hard he tries (and he isn't, even if he "learns" from his mistakes he'll still lose horribly). Contrary to what you believe, people like having the sense of progression, and they won't get that by immediately playing the elite, all they get is a sense of frustration while getting roflstomped into the ground.

>> No.10096008

There are more things to be taken in consideration.
Consider the newcomer who is going to fight the high skiller player. What makes it give up or learn is not actually the gap between the two players, is the dedication within him. How much energy he is willing to spend trying to make his way into the game. How much fun he is having. His interest in winning or getting better at the game. Of course things like the difference in the skill level matters. You feel more motivated if you have a chance of winning that is attainable by hard work, but LUNATIC work just to gain one round is indeed less motivating. However, it's not just the gap that matters.
My first online match was with the champion of my country. Of course we people here are not as skilled as some other places, but we're not bad either. Which means I was not beaten, I was raped. I never lost my interest, though. I kept practicing and playing with people with different skill levels, and the one I played the most was another player who actually later won a tourney too.
My point is clouded, though. I think that restricting players to only play others with similar skill could limit the players' potential and even make it boring. If the difference is too high, then it's up to the player if he will continue or not.
(someone mentioned Mago and Poongko, haha I think that this gap could not possibly be achieved in the hisoutensoku community)

No, really, your point just seems to be "I'm upset." I'm not trying to be an asshat here, that genuinely seems to be the only thing you're trying to convey.

Your central point can't be that you enjoy yourself, as that doesn't conflict with mine. In fact, neither of you have any point which conflicts with mine other than "I disagree and am angry because of it." It seems like both of you see yourselves as the "Unsportsmanlike, self-centered douchebag" I described, and take offense at that. Concerning that reaction, I can only say that your own identifying of yourself as a douchebag is enough justification for me calling you one, albeit indirectly.

Is this a joke?

Other people being unsportsmanlike -> You learn anyway -> Treat other people with the same lack of sportsmanship and expect them to learn anyway, like you did

Central flaw: Other people are not you. You're projecting yourself onto other players and being overly critical of them when your and their conditions are very unlikely to be the same and, what's more, you could not possibly know that the conditions are the same. You're making a baseless assumption that other players should be able to keep playing and improve, strengthening the community. That this is flawed is apparent, as the community is very small and still dying.

>>10096804
It's your responsibility to restate your point if I express in any manner, implied or explicit, that I don't understand it.

Failure to do so is a failure to cooperate in the argument and gives the opponent justified incentive to cease the argument immediately, as your participation in conveying your point is critical to the progression of the argument, and your refusal is the broadcasting of your unwillingness to participate in a reasonable manner.

Repeating what you've already said verbatim is not re-stating your point. I still can't understand what your point is.

It seems to be that your argument is that it's justified to treat new players with unsportsmanlike behavior. Whether or not this is true is irrelevant, as my point is that you're killing your own community with your unsportsmanlike behavior. Justification is irrelevant.

Moreover, what you copied and paste doesn't even begin to express this point in even a vague way.

You've very poorly conveyed in >>10093775 that:
1. You believe that new players have adequate reason to continue playing, as even getting treated with unsportsmanlike behavior does not necessarily impede their enjoyment of the game or the development of their skill level.
2. If a new player does not enjoy the match their in, they should find a different match, as they are putting themselves in a position that they are ill-content with.
3. New players who do not like how other, more experienced players act, are retarded and should not play the game anyway.

Refute:
1. A lack of negative does not equate to a positive. 0=< is not equal to 0<. Even if other players are not necessarily impeding their enjoyment or progression, that does not mean that the community is conducive to said enjoyment or progression, which does not encourage their participation in said community.
2. This advice discourages new players from participating in the game's community, and directly argues for my point.
3. This is not an argument, but a direct attack against new players.

>Repeating what you've already said verbatim is not re-stating your point.
It was not necessary at all to reword it as you had not responded to it at all, other than with an entirely irrelevant comment about never having played online.

>It seems to be that your argument is that it's justified to treat new players with unsportsmanlike behavior.
Your spectacular idiocy is blinding you to the very obvious point I made.

Instead of making up your own words to put in my mouth such as "I'm angry" and "I'm a self-centered douchebag," you could try responding to what I actually said. Which you, five or six posts later, have failed to address. At all.

You said: "The issue is that other parties are initiating matches of very inbalanced skill levels, resulting in one-sided enjoyment, which is very bad sportsmanship."
What I said, as a response, was, "[Your premise, that games with imbalanced skill levels are inherently unenjoyable,] is only true if you're [or, rather, the loser in this case is] not able to have fun losing. Plenty of people play on lunatic even though they can't hit stage four even on a good day. Not everybody derives enjoyment solely from winning."

And your premise of "very bad sportsmanship" was based on the premise that these games involved only one-sided enjoyment, which I had contested. You chose, of course, to ignore the fact that I had challenged it, assumed your own position as fact as if I had never contested it at all, and proceeded to label me as an angry and upset unsportsmanlike self-centered douchebag.

No, it's not a joke.
I understand what you are saying, believe me. And I am grateful for the civilized discussion. I didn't want to sound like I was projecting into other people. I am very much aware that every one is different, and like you said, I can't know if the conditions are the same. I just meant to say that this is not an absolute thing, not everyone who is treated in this "unsportsmanlike" is going to give up. I just used myself as an example to prove that not everyone think of it as a "unsportsmanlike" attitude. If I didn't suddenly realize that I was a lot stronger by playing with more skilled players, I doubt I'd ever gotten so interested in this game. But calm down, I understand that this can be devastating to some other people. So I didn't actually thought of a solution to this, just talked about what I think.
My other point, though, is that just limiting ourselves to only play with people with similar skills would make things boring, repetitive, and it would be harder to progress. If we stop looking at what we could've been and look at what we are now, we should notice there aren't that many people available to start choosing who to battle.
You don't need to reply if you don't want or if you lose your patience. You sound like you're getting too much invested at this, and I'm not intelligent or knowledgeable enough to keep up with the discussion, so I'll keep myself from saying more. What we all want is the same thing, to see more players and have fun.

In this thread, as far as I can tell, a very skilled player joined a game with a listed IP and no other information, and the host of that game turned out to have been playing his first online matches after the fact.

I don't see a conspiracy of elite players to jump on hosts who have openly advertised themselves as being new or unskilled players.

So why did the thread devolve into a shitstorm?

As you have yet to even attempt to state your point when I've made it abundantly clear that I don't confidently understand it, I'm finished with this argument. You're becoming increasingly belligerent, and I believe this is because you understand that you're wrong but are unwilling to admit it. It's my hope that this is due to your own ago, and that you'll come to realize later that you need to treat new players with respect. I enjoy this game and would like its community to become something I and many other people would be a part of.

>>10097025
I'd have to agree.

>>10097097
With any game, new players lack confidence in their place in the community they're putting themselves in. Ideally, these players would come to realize that they do have a place, and be self-motivated toward improving, contributing to another player of another varied skill level, which is conducive to presenting varied levels of player challengers, which, in turn, provides more players of more varied skill levels.

What's happening here, and what happens with a lot of games that get old but still have a dedicated community, is that the community's skill level is all very-much focused on the "high" end of the skill level spectrum. This means that any player who tries to join will be bombarded with the impression that they don't belong at all, and will quit. The older, experienced players, will have a few possible perceptions toward this:

>> No.10097228

>>10097220
First, they might play as they normally would, treating the player like anyone else, and think that the new player would have left anyway, not having the resolve to improve, and this can't necessarily be proven wrong, even if it is very judgmental, insulting and presumptuous.

Second, they might be under the impression that by playing against the new player, they'll encourage them to improve somehow, either by demonstrating that the community is still active or by hurting their ego enough to make them want to get better than the person who hurt said ego.

Third, they might not want the new player to be part of the community at all, and will go out of their way to make them feel unwanted.

The third is the "elitism" that the new players will see regardless of which type of high-experience player they encounter.

>> No.10097231

>>10097228
The solution is, interestingly enough, to not pit low-skill players against high-skill players at all. When players host games and post their IPs here, saying something like "low skill level", what they expect isn't for an experienced player to take it easy on them, but rather for those experienced players to abstain from playing against them at all, and for other, new players to play against them.

I've played a lot of games, seen a lot of games die, and even developed a lot of games wherein I watched the community swell, burst, and dissipate. I understand that experienced players will be dedicated to their community, and the good people of the bunch will want the community to be restored to what it once was, when they played, and because of this they'll mistakenly participate where they aren't wanted. It's important that these players remember how they improved when they first started--that they played against people of varying skill levels, and that what really got them to stay was improving even a little bit and seeing immediate reward for their effort when they played against someone who used to be of the same skill level. Otherwise, it just seems to them like they're running in quicksand, and they'll convince themselves in one way or another that either the game or community isn't worth their time.

A point, or "argument" is the central statement which drives your rhetoric. This is your single, primary aim in the discourse. It should be a single sentence which describes what you hope to accomplish or prove from the exchange.

For example, my point: High-skilled players are destroying the communities they're dedicated to by making low-skilled players feel unwelcome.

This can be argued against, and other arguments, or "points" can conflict with it. For example, a conflicting point: Low-skilled players are destroying old communities by expecting more of dedicated communities, which causes those dedicated players to stop playing.

Both points can be argued.

When I ask, "what's your point?", "re-state your point" or "What's your argument?" what I'm asking is for you to explain to me what you are trying to prove, and I'm asking you to do so originally and in a single sentence.

This is not to say that I'm still arguing with you, because I'm not. You're quite obviously very emotional right now, you're making personal attacks, misrepresenting my position, and otherwise are now employing the use of a variety of logical fallacies to support an argument that you don't even seem to have. Really, I think you're just angry and you're directing it at me under the guise of a disagreement.

One can make a number of arguments; the requirement that an argument must be a single statement that a post revolves around in order to qualify as an argument is something you pulled out of your ass.

>When I ask, "what's your point?", "re-state your point" or "What's your argument?" what I'm asking is for you to explain to me what you are trying to prove, and I'm asking you to do so originally and in a single sentence.

That's not my premise. I don't think you know what a premise is.

Also, yes, you do need a central point. You can have multiple points, but you can't argue them all at once--every argument needs once, central point, by definition. That's what an argument is. If you don't follow that format, you aren't arguing.

"Does someone have any idea why GENERAL threads bring in the kind of people who would not be tolerated in any other context on /jp/ (or even the rest of 4chan)?"

Once people lose their anonymity, there will be drama, arguments, and circlejerks.
Yes, I know /jp/ already has these, because a) unfortunately the board is archived, so you can look up people's posts if they keep using the same images and b) it's a slow board, so you'll keep running into the same people while discussing things, but in my opinion general threads are particularly bad, and I think they should be banned.

I dunno about the glowing white part, maybe her 214C move for Meiling?

Most spellcards can be grazed through by dashing, although some will eat your spirit up really fast if you're in the air, and others (mainly Suika, Meiling, and various other single spellcards) cannot be grazed through because they count as melee.

Some skills have graze properties to them, Cirno has none that I can think of except for her 66C move. (I'm assuming you understand the directional terminology, which is basically just "the direction that number is pointing on your numpad" if you have one.)

>I can't get into the habit of them because they seem wasteful. I'd rather just wait for the opportunity to dash through bullets or punish. Kinda hard to do vs Sakuya though.

That's how they seem to most people at first. You try to BE, get smacked, and think "Ok, so I got hit anyways AND I lost an orb. Well this sucks..."

Against Sakuya, it becomes obvious why you need them, but almost every other character has alternating melee and bullet strings you can only safely get out of via border escaping. It's a really strong mechanic, and becomes obligatory when you face people with strong enough pressure.

Especially in the air. Holy shit, the first time you do j.a j.6a *anything* against someone and they BE6 your j.6a and hit you in the face out of your bullet...That's one hell of a wakeup call.
"...You can do that?"
And then you try to cancel your bullet into air backdash j.a as fast as you can, and it doesn't work. When you realize j.a j.6/8a is literally unsafe as an air string, that's when it hits you just how strong BE is.

Damn, that could've been a lot more fun without that horrible lag. GGs nevertheless. Nice to get a chance to de-rust my Cirno a bit.

I wonder how it would've ended up in a more lag-free environment, judging by your skills you were probably held back by the lag just as much as I.

Also, it seemed to me like you haven't played against Cirno that much, falling often for that 5C, the 5-card ice cube and so on, allowing me some easy victories here and there. Given time you could've probably figured them out properly, which would've made things a lot harder for me.

>> No.10114178

I've never played against a decent Cirno, but i'm usually very offensive so I often get caught by these kind of things.

The big problem was your 66C, It has priority over my 66C, 66A, 66B AND default 623, good thing that you can't get that much damages with it, even with a CH.

The problem with the lag in my side was that I couldn't finish most of my combos, and that I couldn't correctly delay me quake okizeme, which is usually extremely unfair.

66C is really handy, though when my opponents start blocking it I'm in for quite an ass kicking. Still, it's one of the only 2 grazing moves Cirno has, and with all these fragile as hell bullets it's often her best bet to counter an opponent carelessly rushing in with a bullet cover.

Without the lag I could've got some proper use of her default 623 though, on max level it has a ridiculously short startup which makes it occasionally useful as a reversal substitute of a sort, among other interesting uses. Eats bullets like candy too and has a relatively short recovery, so even if it misses I'm quite safe unless you graze it.
