Hello /jp/, I am from /g/. I heard you guys have some pretty strict rules in regards to what can be posted here, but I'm looking for people who are familiar with Akihabara.

I will be travelling to Nippon in less than two weeks for a holiday, and I was wondering if any of you happen to of any shops specializing in mechanical keyboards, or any cool /g/ related stuff in general I should check out. Google reveals little in the way of keyboards.

>> No.10021470

Stating you are from another board is the first mistake.
But you seem like a nice person, I can't help you though.

>> No.10021472

Are you looking for a mechanical keyboard or a JAPANESE mechanical keyboard?

Because if you just want a keyboard simply ordering a filco or a das will be cheaper than buying one from a store there.

A Japanese mechanical keyboard would be fine, I plan to throw blank keycaps on whatever I buy and use a US typeset. I heard they have some nice products that are a little cheaper online, plus stores where you can buy MX keycaps.

Sorry, I won't make this mistake if I post here again.

The mistake is saying where you're from. I never understood why people do that.

Anyways, there should be plenty of stores with neat stuff you might like. I don't know about keyboards, but just walk around and explore. That's part of the fun.

Wait, how exactly are you benefiting off buying a japanese keyboard and using blank caps?

Other than being able to say "it's Japanese" I'm not seeing any logic behind this. I can assure you anything Das/FIlco/Ducky make are equal in quality to what Japan produces.

Well, it was more different coloured keycaps and things I was after. A friend of a friend supposedly had their relative bring them back a bag of them from Akihabara, hence me coming here to ask you guys.

I think you would be better off getting a mechanical keyboard online, but by all means explore.

It would be more difficult to ship back, but if you are at all interested in Japanese 80s/early 90s computers (before they started making IBM PC clones), this would be the perfect opportunity to get one.

Pic related, here's a Sharp X68000 (left) and an FM Towns (right).

No, the pre-Windows Touhou games were developed for the PC98, an entirely different hardware platform.

That's a bit like asking if a Nintendo DS can play PSP games.

Before IBM PC clones forced everyone to follow that standard, Japanese PC manufacturers designed their own hardware platforms, mostly or entirely incompatible with IBM PC software. The Sharp X68000 machines had a different CPU architecture (Motorola 68k), custom video hardware, and a Yamaha FM sound chip. The PC98 machines were based around Sharp's x86 processors, but featured entirely different supporting hardware than what the IBM PC standard mandated.

For a decent part of the early 90s, Microsoft sold versions of Windows modified to run on PC98 hardware. PC clones eventually beat NEC's PC98 architecture on price, because there were dozens of PC clone manufacturers and only one company manufacturing PC98s, so in the mid 90s, NEC switched manufacturing generic PC clones as well and ended the era of Japanese computers being their own special designs.

Enjoy you're history lesson, /jp/!
