Hello. First post on this sub. はじめまして、宜しくお願いします。

I’ll start with my confession. I have been speaking/using/studying Japanese for 30+ years and I feel I am forever stuck in the middle somewhere in terms of overall fluency and knowledge of the language.

I’m American. I majored in Japanese in university in the late 80’s. No, I was not the best student, but I got my degree. After uni, I went to Japan. Lived and worked there almost 20 years. My wife is Japanese. My job involves Japanese. Sounds like I should be an expert? Far from it.

To someone who doesn’t speak Japanese, or at a beginner level, I may sound fluent. But to anyone who does speak Japanese past the upper-intermediate level, I think it's obvious to them I lack vocabulary and have some (many) fossilized bad habits.

I don't really have a good idea where my level is at. Fresh out of school, I think I might have been able to pass the JLPT N2. Now I think I’d be lucky to pass N3 with a lot of work. I’ve actually never taken the test - I think I should have, way back then. I don’t have (much) trouble having conversations in Japanese, and my listening is good - I’m not a beginner - but I always feel the limits of my vocabulary holding me back. I often find myself explaining things in clunky, roundabout ways if I don’t know how to say something.

I think my Japanese ability increased a lot the first few years I was in Japan, then it plateaued and stayed there for decades.

Anyone else in a similar situation? That is, not a student anymore (and haven’t been for a long time), been using Japanese for years but never pushed over into advanced levels. How do you move ahead again?
