Mamizou's gimmick has always been disguise and anthropomorphosis, pretending to be a human sorceress while hawking her wares and bending public favor towards certain monsters.
In MGE they slowly spread propaganda and sell mana-laden items that corrupt a town peacefully. Shacking up with one is seen as a boon because they're savvy and competent, able to guarantee you'll have a nice life whether you want to be a laid back househusband, valued leader of the community, or the next Lawrence Craft.
MGE's “Gyoubu Danuki” takes namesake from a tanuki lord with eight hundred and eight vassals who was said to have supported a rebellion through mystery and mischief.
Mamizou is based on another named tanuki, Danzaburou the moneylender. This wasn't predatory lending, but essentially very forgiving bank loans to impoverished miners. Danzaburou was respected and loved.
In both cases they have a sinister, gangster edge, but this is for good reason.
Yakuza started as a marginalized group of merchants known for selling fake goods, and eventually grew in a large stabilizing force similar to a more benevolent Mafia. There is thus a conflation of attributes where the leaders of marginalized groups, merchants, and mob bosses are poured into the same character.
This is enhanced by their shady nature as shapeshifters and natural mask-like facial pattern.
Really, don't you think it would be cool to marry a mob boss?
