It seemed like something both of them conceptualized. Mori liked the way it worked with their character lore. It's just not something that works in practice, it just makes for an uncomfortable viewing experience. The problem is these girls aren't playing out fictional versions of themselves, they are doing a kind of blend of in-character and out-of-character, so it's uncomfortable to watch Kiara get rejected over and over because it's not clear how real or fake it is. Combined with Kiara's overall underdog complex, it's not something that really works.

You're right it's starting to fade, which is nice.
