So who were Bern and Lamda supposed to represent? The higurashi characters had nothing to do with this, so were they just there for the plot and a representation of characters internal motivations or something?

It's certainly lewd to realize that your crush is a human being. It's very hard not to idolize your crush, especially if she is 2D.
