this is about the sacred field of phenotypes
someone from hong kong clearly looks different to someone from the north east of china. even a place as small as japan has a bunch of different phenotypes, many of which overlap with china and korea, yes, but a bunch look really different too. over time, all 3 have also developed their own phenotypes that you won't see too often in the other regions
east asians only look the same when you get a korean, a japanese, a chinese, etc who all happen to be similar or even the same phenotypes. on the other hand, it's why you get stereotypically chinese/korean/japanese phenotypes that are quite distinct from one another
