Alright so I've been playing since 2007 maybe? And I've never played with the keyboard.
Granted I've tried, but I would always plug the gamepad right back in.
With a joystick your movement is smoother. You can also map those buttans however you please.
Basically I'm using a ps4 controller, slow is triangle, shoot is circle, bomb is R1.
Only pros play with a usb steering wheel.

If you stick with this you should look into communities for hamachi servers, maybe convince your frens to play. Phantasmagoria of Flower View is honestly my favorite in the series because it feels like a trainer and you can get your buddies in on it.
With that being said don't be afraid to play games out of order. (I started with Immaterial and Missing Power for the tsurupettan)
