I would say you have a lot of freedom when it comes to mysteries. I personally don't care if the characters are WTC-related or not, But it's easier for people who are new to mysteries to get a grasp of the story. My own mystery has almost nothing to do with the source material, I'm just using the sprites. As long as it's a Mystery that is set within the game rules it should be good!.

My personal favorite trick I setting it a mystery to where the player assumes a lot about the personality of the character since I'm using a sprite from Umineko, only to have them act in a completely different way!
