Thinkong in japanese has been a success beyond my wildest dreams. Retention is through the roof as is understanding and the feeling of being a retard breaks eventually and your mind begins chaining words.

Whats worked for me, and its hard to explain if youre monolingual but: turn off english whatsoever. Force yourself to think solely in japanese AND images. Instead of using english words when reading or reviewing, use only images. Sound radicals in japanese. Spell things out in japanese mora by mora! Like you were little kids!
I thought it was retarded, too, but its really worked and I'm not going back!
